Josh Holmstrom enters his second season with UMass Lowell hockey, joining the staff as the Director of Hockey Operations prior to the 2025-26 season. A former River Hawk standout and two-time captain, Holmstrom returned to his alma mater after building a diverse background in hockey operations, coaching and professional play.
Holmstrom most recently served as an assistant coach at the Air Force Academy, where he contributed to practice planning, game preparation, video breakdown and team operations. He helped coordinate special teams and faceoff strategies, contributing to a Falcons team that posted a 21% power play success rate in 2023, its highest mark since 2010, and a 54% faceoff win rate, which ranked seventh nationally. Holmstrom also handled hockey operations responsibilities, including team travel, off-ice logistics, practice organization and video preparation.
Prior to his time at Air Force, Holmstrom served as the head coach of the Walpole Express of the Eastern Hockey League, leading the program to its first championship appearance in organization history while helping more than a dozen players advance to collegiate hockey.
A two-time captain at UMass Lowell from 2010-14, Holmstrom was a key member of the River Hawks program and earned multiple team and university honors, including three consecutive Unsung Hero Awards (2012-14), the Gus Coutu Award (2014) and the Jon Hellstedt Spirit of Service Award (2014). Following his collegiate career, he played professionally for six seasons, appearing in more than 360 games across the American Hockey League and ECHL.
Holmstrom earned his bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in management and marketing from UMass Lowell in 2014.
