UMass Lowell Athletics

A native of Chelmsford, Mass., John Muse enters his third season with the UMass Lowell cross country and track and field teams and will assist in developing the teams' sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers. He is the program’s recruiting coordinator.


Muse joined the staff as the River Hawk program was beginning its transition to Division I.
 
Muse comes to UMass Lowell following assistant coaching stints at American International College (Spring, 2013) and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (2012-13) as well as the head post at Worcester State University for cross country and women’s track and field.
 
During his brief stay at AIC, he helped the Yellow Jacket women to school records in six events, including the 60 meter hurdles, 100 and 200 meter dashes as well as the 4X100 and 4X400 meter relays and heptathlon. Last spring the AIC women finished runner-up at the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament, marking their best result ever.
 
While an assistant at WPI, Muse coached Engineers to four school records, including the men’s 60 meter hurdles and 200 meter dash; and the women’s 500 and 600 meters. He created training programs for sprint, hurdles and relay athletes for both programs, as well as a regimen for injured and recovering athletes.
 
Muse began his coaching career at Worcester State where he began as an assistant and later became the head coach of the cross country teams and women’s track and field team. Over the course of his stay, he coached one All-American, five NCAA Championship qualifiers, nine New England champions and an astounding 80 Massachusetts State Athletic Conference (MASCAC) champions.
 
Muse is a USTFCCCA certified coach in combined events and jumps and holds a USATF Level 1 certification and National Pole Vault Coaches Association (NPVCA) certification.
 
A sprinter on the Westfield State track and field team from 2003-08, Muse was a captain as a senior. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history.
