LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's track and field team performed well at both the Ed Daniels Classic and Tufts Spring Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
"Overall, the team had a good day," said Head Coach
Gary Gardner. "We are happy with the consistency all the groups are showing this time of year. That will help us in championship meets."
Junior
Bridget Geary (Lowell, Mass.) led the River Hawks in the 100m dash prelim, finishing in 18
th place with a 13.16 mark, before sophomore
Meredith Feener (Walpole, Mass.) claimed 23
rd with a 13.40 mark. Next was junior
Shayla Quill (Andover, Mass.) in the 100m hurdles, finishing in 17
th place with a 17.50 mark. Next was the 400m hurdles, where freshman
Kathryn Perrone (Washington, Mass.) represented the River Hawks with a fifth-place finish and 1:07.28 mark.
Junior
Jayani Santos (Tewksbury, Mass.) shined in the 200m dash, earning the win with a 24.59 mark, before junior
Soria Roberts (Warwick, R.I.) and Geary finished back-to-back in 16
th and 17
th place respectively, with times of 26.71 and 26.72. Quill rounded them out in 48
th with a 29.21 mark.
In the field events, the long jump got it started and graduate student
Fleur Balogh de Galantha (Grafton, Mass.) led the way with a 5.04m mark. Junior
Nethica Auguste (Bridgewater, Mass.) was next in 11
th place with a 4.79m leap, before she led the way in the triple jump with a 10.59m mark. Sophomore
Anya Neira (Methuen, Mass.) also competed in the triple jump, finishing in 14
th with a 9.54m mark.
Three women competed in the pole vault, and junior
Úna Brice (Cork, Ireland) led with a tie for fourth place with a 3.05m mark. Graduate student
Jules Gravier (Bronxville, N.Y.) and sophomore
Jaden Kasule (Tewksbury, Mass.) tied for sixth place, clearing 3.05m as well.
Sophomore
Avery Pitts (Willington, Conn.) won the high jump, clearing 1.62m, before sophomore
Chloe Champagne (Brockton, Mass.) finished in 17
th place with a 1.42m mark.
Next was the women's elite shot put, where junior
Nhyira Nkansah (Chelmsford, Mass.) finished second with a 12.22m mark, before Balogh de Galantha claimed sixth place with a toss of 11.66m.
Freshman
Zoe Clarke (Dracut, Mass.) impressed in the discus throw, finishing in third place with a 38.72m throw as the lone River Hawk to close out the day.
At Tufts, freshman
Nyrah Joseph (Billerica, Mass.) and senior
Paige Murphy (Billerica, Mass.) completed the heptathlon, with Joseph finishing in fifth out of 20 with a 4,226 points and Murphy claiming eighth with a total of 3,801 points.
"Today was a real test of grit for the multis," said Associate Head Coach Ally Waruch. "The wind was relentless all day and the day got pretty long. We really had to lock in and refocus a few times to stay positive and aggressive. It was a great test to see where we are and get some things cleaned up for conference."
