SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Juniors
Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) and
Bronwyn Hilbert (Lancaster, Pa.) each found the back of the net four times, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (3-4) earned a thrilling, 15-14 victory over the Wofford Terriers (1-6) in an offensive battle on Monday afternoon.
"We do like to make things interesting," said Head Coach
Lisa Miller. "We went up, went down, tied it up, went ahead, and then needed to make a play in the waning seconds to preserve the lead. A LOT of drama. Probably the most exciting year of college lacrosse I've seen. We are going to keep competing and improving."
Right behind Bowers and Hilbert, junior
Emily Dodd (Calgary, Alberta) led the squad with two assists alongside scoring her first goal as a River Hawk for three points. Senior
Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) and redshirt freshman
Chiara Pompei (Catonsville, Md.) both added a pair of goals, while senior
Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.) and freshman
Brienne Brezynskie (Elmira, Ontario) rounded out the scoring with a goal and an assist each. In net, freshman
Lauren Lorentzen (Carlsbad, Ca.) made her first career start, making seven saves over 60 minutes.
Although the Terriers opened the scoring with a goal less than a minute in, the lead didn't last for long, as the River Hawks' offense found its footing with Hilbert and Bowers each scoring over the next seven minutes to take a 2-1 lead. The run continued moments later for the visitors, as UMass Lowell strung together four more in the final four minutes off the sticks of Bowers, Lydon, Brezynskie, and Hilbert to take a 6-1 lead into the second quarter.
Both teams continued the offensive onslaught in the second period, with Wofford scoring twice in the first five minutes, interrupted by Hilbert's third of the game, to cut the deficit to 7-3. The River Hawks responded with haste, as Pompei struck with 8:33 on the clock to once again make it a five-goal game, but the Terriers scored four of the final five goals, with Bowers scoring the lone goal for UMass Lowell in a woman-down situation, to make it a 9-7 game heading into the break.
Coming out of halftime, both teams locked down defensively, as neither side scored a goal for over five minutes. Although Wofford broke the scoring drought at 9:48, the River Hawks responded with Dodd's first goal of the season 30 seconds later. Wofford, however, put together a five-goal scoring stretch to take a 13-10 lead, before a goal in the final seconds by Lydon made it a two-goal game with a quarter to play.
In the fourth, the River Hawks executed near perfectly, with Hilbert opening the scoring 56 seconds in. Well over seven minutes later, with the score still 13-12, Bowers ripped a shot past the keeper to even the score. Continuing the dominant fourth quarter, Pompei kept the stretch going with her second of the day at 4:52, before Shultz capped off the scoring barrage with one final UMass Lowell goal. Wofford scored once more with just over three minutes to play, but UMass Lowell locked in defensively, sealing the 15-14 victory.
Next up, the River Hawks wrap up their trip down south when they visit the Furman Paladins on Thursday, March 12. Opening draw is scheduled for 6 p.m.
