BOSTON, Mass. – A small group of athletes from the UMass Lowell women's indoor track and field team traveled to Boston University on Friday to compete in the John Thomas Terrier Classic.
The 800m kicked it off, and it was junior
Emily Burdick (Billerica, Mass.) that led the squad in 42
nd out of 156 runners with a time of 2:16.09. Next was senior
Nia Mainer-Smith (Taunton, Mass.), who finished in 46
th with a 2:16.70 mark. Sophomore
Brenna Corcoran (Haverhill, Mass.) was next, claiming 69
th place with a time of 2:19.22, before junior
Katharine Cottone (Little Falls, N.J.) finished in 96
th with a 2:22.58 mark. Sophomore
Isabel McIntyre (Dover, N.H.) finished in 133
rd with a 2:29.35 mark and sophomore
Alyssa Fiorino (Billerica, Mass.) rounded out the River Hawks with a 2:30.77 mark for 138
th.
28 women competed in the 200m dash invite, and junior
Jayani Santos (Tewksbury, Mass.) finished in 12
th place with a time of 24.75 as the lone River Hawk in the event. Senior
Raihana Yameogo (Dillsburg, Pa.) was also the lone River Hawk in her event, the 1,000m run. She finished in 26
th place with a time of 2:59.05.
Five UMass Lowell runners took part in the mile, as sophomore
Salma Boukhtam (Quincy, Mass.) led the way in 95
th place with a 5:08.62 mark, just before senior
Nubia Pereira (Woburn, Mass.) finished in 96
th with a personal-best time of 5:08.63. Sophomore
Lauren Long (Lunenburg, Mass.) was next in 115
th with a personal-best time of 5:12.69, followed by graduate student
Sarah Ross (Agawam, Mass.) in 140
th (PR, 5:21.53) and sophomore
Selena Wood (Abington, Mass.) in 173
rd (5:34.58).
Next was the 3,000m, where six River Hawks competed. Sophomore
Georgia Brooks (Groton, Mass.) led the way in 84
th place with a time of 10:07.53, before senior
Kylie Marion (Baldwinville, Mass.) grabbed 88
th with a personal-best 10:09.09 mark. Graduate student
Delaney Swanson (Swanzey, N.H.) was next in 114
th place with a personal-best 10:27.41 mark, followed by freshman
Anna Fondakowski (122
nd, 10:31.25), senior
Miana Caraballo (Methuen, Mass.) (126
th, 10:32.48) and freshman
Krista Bettez (Gardner, Mass.) (133
rd, PR, 10:43.79). Concluding the event was senior
Mia Jones (Blacksburg, Va.) in the 5,000m run, and she finished in 76
th place with a time of 18:26.04.
"It was a good step forward for our middle-distance runners," said Head Coach
Gary Gardner. "Nia and Emily had great races and finished them off really well. You can see Brenna figuring out her races today and it was as good of a race as I've seen her run. The mile group also put together a nice group of races."
Next, the women will compete in the Harvard Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, January 31 at Harvard.
