DURHAM, N.H. – The UMass Lowell men's track and field team returned to New Hampshire on Sunday to complete the two-day America East Outdoor Championship, finishing in third place as a team with 129 points.
UAlbany got the win with 163.50 points overall, while UMBC ended in second place with 145 points.
"The men really fought hard this weekend and competed very well," said Head Coach
Gary Gardner. "The past few seasons, many things fell our way and this meet, a few things didn't fall just right for us as far as a team score goes. That happens with a less-experienced team. Overall, I am really pleased with our effort and competitiveness."
A plethora of individuals performed extremely well, collecting multiple podium appearances. The first came on the first track event of the day in the 4x100m relay. The team of freshman
Iyanuoluwapo Omisore (Lagos, Nigeria), sophomore
Evan Imasogie (Lowell, Mass.), graduate student
Aras Kaya (Winchester, Mass.) and sophomore
Daniel Kennedy (Tolland, Conn.) broke the program record with a time of 41.08 for third place, adding six points to the team score.
The next race saw another great performance with junior
Sean Kennedy-Wonneberger (East Haddam, Conn.) winning the 1,500m run with a 3:53.15 mark for 10 points. Junior
Hatim Boukhtam (Abington, Mass.) also scored, finishing in sixth place with a 3:54.49 mark for three points.
The 400m dash saw one scorer, as freshman
Michael Fisher (Wallingford, Conn.) finished in sixth place for three points with a time of 48.39. This was followed up by all three runners in the 110m hurdles adding points for the team. Senior
Luke Stelmach (Sterling, Mass.) led with a fourth-place performance for five points and a 15.09 mark. Junior
Tristan O'Riorden was just behind him in fifth place with a 15.19 mark for four points. Sophomore
Nidlaire Olivier (Lowell, Mass.) claimed eighth place to earn one point with his 15.31 mark.
Senior
Graham Stedfast (Rowley, Mass.) shined once again in the 800m run, breaking his personal record with a time of 1:48.68 to earn second place and eight points. Junior
Basit Iddriss (Milford, Conn.) just missed out on scoring, finishing in 10
th with a time of 1:53.98.
In the 100m, Kennedy was the lone scorer for the River Hawks, finishing in seventh place with a 10.85 mark to total two points. Omisore (11.01), Imasogie (11.04), Kaya (11.05) and freshman
Michael Gyimah (Kumasi, Ghana) (11.09) all finished consecutively in 10
th to 13
th place, respectively. Gyimah (21.94) and Omisore (22.29) also competed in the 200m dash, finishing in 11
th and 12
th place.
In the 5,000m, the River Hawks had two scorers and four total runners in the top 10. Freshman
Isaac Henderson led the way in fourth place with a personal-best mark of 14:19.18 for five points. Senior Jan Wouter Van Den Akker (Groningen, Netherlands) added three points with a sixth-place performance and time of 14:22.03. Kennedy-Wonneberger crossed in ninth place with a time of 14:27.96, before freshman
Devin Moreau (Tyngsboro, Mass.) finished just behind him in 10
th place with a personal-best time of 14:31.03.
In the 4x800 relay, the team of senior
Andrew Benassi (Reading, Mass.), Boukhtam, Iddriss and Stedfast claimed fourth place with a 7:40.65 mark. The 4x400m relay concluded the track events and the team of sophomore
Anthony Massari (Dumont, N.J.), Fisher, junior
Alejandro Lynch (Somerville, Mass.) and O'Riorden finished in fifth with a time of 3:14.77.
In the field events, senior
Ian Camerato (Mount Laurel, N.J.) led the shot put with a sixth-place finish and 15.37m mark for three points. Junior
Mukanya Kazadi (Woburn, Mass.) also competed, finishing in ninth with a toss of 14.98m. Camerato also took part in the discus, finishing 11
th with a 43.93m mark.
Graduate student
James Kotowski (Stoneham, Mass.) continued his stellar season with another javelin victory, tossing 69.36m for 10 points and the victory. This was followed up by the pole vault, which saw two River Hawks combine for five points for the team. Freshman
Sawyer O'Riorden (Stow, Mass.) finished sixth with a 4.28m mark for three points, before graduate student
Daniel Cuddy (Hudson, Mass.) claimed seventh, clearing 4.13m for two points.
Stelmach found success in the high jump, winning a gold medal for 10 points with a 2.01m mark. Freshman
Camren Allain (Carver, Mass.) added four points with a fifth-place finish and 1.96m mark, while sophomore
Shane Exilhomme (Orlando, Fla.) finished in sixth with a 1.91m mark for three points.
In the triple jump, freshman
Jack Shepherd led the River Hawks in seventh place with a 13.96m mark and two points. Graduate student
Brandon Williams (Severn, Md.) also competed, finishing in 11
th place with a 13.53m mark. Williams also competed in the long jump (12
th, 6.53m).
The decathlon also finished up their events on Sunday, and junior
Derek Munroe (Tewksbury, Mass.) finished second overall with 6,801 points, while sophomore
Brandon Riley (Weymouth, Mass.) claimed third with 6,744. The first decathlon event of the day was the 110m hurdles, in which Riley claimed second place with a 15.72 mark. Munroe finished in sixth place with a time of 16.34. They went right to discus, and Munroe won the event with a 37.82m mark, while Riley finished third with a distance of 34.26m.
Next was the decathlon pole vault, and Munroe finished second with a 4.30m mark, as Riley's 4.10m mark was good for fourth place. The javelin followed and Munroe finished second once again with a 50.58m toss. Riley claimed fifth with a 42.27m mark, before the 1,500m run closed it out. Munroe finished fourth in the race with a time of 4:52.29, while Riley earned sixth place at 5:03.78.
