River Hawks Nearly Pull Off Late Comeback but Fall to Dartmouth, 14-12

HANOVER, N.H. – Sophomore Alexa Kuhn tied her career high with 16 saves, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (11-3) nearly pulled off a second-half comeback, but fell to the Dartmouth Big Green (8-5), 14-12, on Tuesday afternoon.

"I'm proud of the way we competed and came back from a four goal deficit," said Head Coach Lisa Miller. "The kids gave it everything they had. Dartmouth's draw taker is special and we just couldn't figure it out. It's on me to find a way to better prepare us on the circle."

Leading the way for the River Hawks' offense, sophomore Jillian Goldie (Owen Sound, Ontario) tallied three goals and an assist for four points. Right behind her, junior Audra Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) added a hat trick, while senior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) scored twice. Sophomore Bronwyn Hilbert (Lancaster, Pa.) chipped in with a goal and an assist, and junior Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.), sophomore Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.), and freshman Sydney Correll (West Grove, Pa.) all tallied a goal.

The Big Green started the game strong, posting three goals in the first seven minutes of the game to take an early lead. Although the visitors continued to control possession, Kuhn was up for the challenge, making eight stops in the first quarter to keep the opposition off the board for the remainder of the period. Meanwhile, UMass Lowell started to hit its stride on offense, as Hansen and Shultz struck within 26 seconds of each other, cutting the Dartmouth lead to 3-2 heading into the second quarter.

In the second period, the hosts started to get in to rhythm, using a pair of goals in the opening minutes to take a three-goal advantage, 5-2. UMass Lowell answered right back though, as Catlin added her first score of the game to cut into the lead. Despite the Big Green adding another goal at 9:59, the River Hawks continued to fight, adding two more goals, this time off the sticks of Goldie and Correll, to once again make it a one-goal game. Dartmouth finished the half strong, adding three goals to take a 9-5 advantage into the break.

Coming out of halftime, the Big Green struck first at the 14:16 mark, making it a five-score difference. The River Hawks refused to back down though, as Hilbert found Goldie open, setting up the sophomore to rip a shot past the keeper to get her squad back on the board. After Dartmouth added one more, the visitors locked down on defense, not allowing another goal the rest of the quarter, while Hilbert, Goldie, and Bowers all tallied a goal to cut the deficit to 11-9 with 15 minutes to play.

With momentum on their side, the River Hawks continued to fight, finding the back of the net twice to begin the final quarter, knotting up the score for the first time. Dartmouth finally ended their scoring drought with just over seven minutes to play, but Hansen countered moments later, striking for the third time on the afternoon to once again even the score, this time at 12-12. In the final minutes, the Big Green struck twice, and despite a strong effort from the visitors, they were unable to pull closer, sealing the 14-12 decision.

Next up, the River Hawks wrap up non-conference play when they visit the Massachusetts Minutewomen on Tuesday, April 22. The opening draw is set for 3 p.m. at Garber Field.
