PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The UMass Lowell women's track and field team made the trek to Providence Friday afternoon to compete in the Friar Invitational in rainy and cold conditions.
"There were tough conditions tonight with the rain and mid-40s temperatures, which is not ideal, but the team raced well," said Head Coach
Gary Gardner. "Some of our younger athletes had nice breakthroughs and are learning to race at this level."
The 400m hurdles kicked it off with
Katharine Cottone representing the River Hawks and finishing fourth with a time of 1:08.33. Junior
Nia Mainer-Smith (Taunton, Mass.) was the lone River Hawk in the 400m dash, zooming to a fourth-place finish and time of 57.97.
In the 800m, sophomore
Emily Burdick (Billerica, Mass.) led the four River Hawks in the event in 17
th place with a time of 2:19.49, before freshman
Brenna Corcoran (Haverhill, Mass.) claimed 28
th with a time of 2:22.55. Freshmen
Isabel McIntyre (Dover, N.H.) and
Alyssa Fiorino (Billerica, Mass.) finished in 42
nd and 44
th, respectively, with times of 2:29.37 and 2:31.31.
Four more River Hawks took part in the mile, as graduate student
Mary Yount (Northampton, Mass.) led the way in 24
th with a 5:08.20 mark. Junior
Emma Eagan (Danvers, Mass.) claimed 39
th with a time of 5:20.21, before junior
Raihana Yameogo (Dillsburg, Pa.) finished 43
rd with a 5:23.96 mark. Freshman
Selena Wood (Abington, Mass.) rounded out the River Hawk runners in 47
th with a time of 5:31.05.
Sarah Ross had a great performance as the lone River Hawk in the 5,000m to close out the running events, finishing in fourth place out of 31 runners, just missing out on a personal best with a time of 16:53.09.
"
Sarah Ross had a great race and is back where she left off," said Gardner.
The high jump was the only field event of the day, and it was senior
Fleur Balogh de Galantha (Grafton, Mass.) that finished in first with a 1.55m mark.
