4/11/2025 11:08:00 PM

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The UMass Lowell women's track and field team made the trek to Providence Friday afternoon to compete in the Friar Invitational in rainy and cold conditions.

"There were tough conditions tonight with the rain and mid-40s temperatures, which is not ideal, but the team raced well," said Head Coach Gary Gardner. "Some of our younger athletes had nice breakthroughs and are learning to race at this level."

The 400m hurdles kicked it off with Katharine Cottone representing the River Hawks and finishing fourth with a time of 1:08.33. Junior Nia Mainer-Smith (Taunton, Mass.) was the lone River Hawk in the 400m dash, zooming to a fourth-place finish and time of 57.97.

In the 800m, sophomore Emily Burdick (Billerica, Mass.) led the four River Hawks in the event in 17th place with a time of 2:19.49, before freshman Brenna Corcoran (Haverhill, Mass.) claimed 28th with a time of 2:22.55. Freshmen Isabel McIntyre (Dover, N.H.) and Alyssa Fiorino (Billerica, Mass.) finished in 42nd and 44th, respectively, with times of 2:29.37 and 2:31.31.

Four more River Hawks took part in the mile, as graduate student Mary Yount (Northampton, Mass.) led the way in 24th with a 5:08.20 mark. Junior Emma Eagan (Danvers, Mass.) claimed 39th with a time of 5:20.21, before junior Raihana Yameogo (Dillsburg, Pa.) finished 43rd with a 5:23.96 mark. Freshman Selena Wood (Abington, Mass.) rounded out the River Hawk runners in 47th with a time of 5:31.05.

Sarah Ross had a great performance as the lone River Hawk in the 5,000m to close out the running events, finishing in fourth place out of 31 runners, just missing out on a personal best with a time of 16:53.09.

"Sarah Ross had a great race and is back where she left off," said Gardner.

The high jump was the only field event of the day, and it was senior Fleur Balogh de Galantha (Grafton, Mass.) that finished in first with a 1.55m mark.
