River Hawks Use Second Quarter Surge to Down New Hampshire, 15-8

LOWELL. Mass. – Junior Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) tallied a career-high four assists, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (7-2, 1-0 AE) took down the New Hampshire Wildcats (2-6, 0-1 AE), 15-8, in the conference play opener on Sunday afternoon.
"The America East right now is shaping up to be a highly competitive conference, so I'm happy to get the win," said Head Coach Lisa Miller. "We're 1-0 in the America East, which is exactly where we want to be. We knew UNH was going to be scrappy and fight, and I thought they brought that today."
Lydon, who tallied a goal to total five points, was all over the box score, adding a ground ball, a caused turnover, and four draw controls to her stat line. Tied with her with five points, senior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) finished with four goals, one assist, two ground balls, two caused turnovers, and five draw controls. Junior Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.) added two goals and two assists, while sophomore Jillian Goldie (Owen Sound, Ontario) finished with three goals and an assist. Rounding out the goal scorers, junior Audra Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) finished with a hat trick, while sophomore Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) and sophomore Marlee Green (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) each chipped in a goal. In net, sophomore Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) finished with six saves in the start.
The game opened as a back-and-forth battle between the two sides, with New Hampshire getting the upper hand early, scoring at the 14:11 mark to take a 1-0 lead. It didn't take long for the River Hawks to respond though, as Catlin capitalized on a woman-up advantage to even the score just over two minutes later. The two teams locked down on defense, as the score remained the same for nearly half the period before the Wildcats ended the drought with a goal at 4:10. In the final seconds of the quarter, Lydon found Bowers, who ripped one past the keeper to knot the game up at 2-2 heading into the second.
The second quarter proved to be all UMass Lowell, as the River Hawks struck twice off the sticks of Schultz and Lydon to take their first lead of the day, 4-2, just over three minutes into the period. Â Although the Wildcats scored two of the next three goals, with Goldie scoring in between the two, the hosts dominated for the remainder of the quarter. With 6:01 to play, Hansen tallied her first of the day, kickstarting a 5-0 run for the River Hawks, highlighted by two from Goldie and one more from Hansen, to give UMass Lowell a commanding lead, 10-4, heading into the break.
Coming out of halftime, both sides had put their focus on defense, as each team recorded only one shot in the opening four minutes. With 10:49 on the clock, the River Hawks struck as Lydon found Shultz open in front of the net, setting up the junior for a perfect shot straight into the back of the net. Although UMass Lowell out shot the opposition 8-1 throughout the remainder of the quarter, solid defensive performances by both sides kept the score the same, 11-4, heading into the final 15 minutes.
Looking to finish off the victory, the River Hawks opened the quarter with three of the first goals, two coming off the stick of Catlin while Green added one. Though the Wildcats added three straight, UMass Lowell refused to let them get any closer, with Hansen adding a goal in the final minute, sealing the 15-8 decision.
Next up, the River Hawks hit the road to take on the Vermont Catamounts on Saturday, March 22. The opening draw control is set for 3:30 p.m. at Virtue Field.
