River Hawks Down Manhattan, 13-5, In Season Opener

BRONX, N.Y. – Senior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) tallied a team-high five points, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (1-0) took down the Manhattan Jaspers (0-1), 13-5, in the 2025 season opener.

"It's nice to join the men with an opening win," said head coach Lisa Miller. "We did some things well and have a few things to work on. We're back at it on Monday to get ready for Merrimack."

With her fourth and final goal of the night, Catlin became the program's all-time goal scorer, totaling 94 in her career.

Behind Catlin with four points, sophomore Jillian Goldie (Owen Sound, Ontario) tallied two goals and two assists. Junior Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) chipped in with two goals and an assist
, while junior Audra Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) and freshman Georgia Ruscitti (Toronto, Ontario) each added a goal and two assists. Sophomore Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) tallied two scores, while junior Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.) rounded things out with a goal. In net, sophomore Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) made nine saves while only allowing five goals, good for a .643 save percentage.

The River Hawks came out of the gates firing, playing perfect defense in the first quarter to hold the opposition scoreless. Meanwhile, Lydon started the scoring for UMass Lowell, scoring the first goal of the season just over a minute in. Just under five minutes later, Lydon dished a pass out to Bowers, who snuck a shot in from the side of the net, giving her squad a 2-0 lead. The River Hawks offense then erupted, as Catlin, Hansen, and Bowers all tallied a goal within two minutes. Lydon added another with 1:45 on the clock, giving the visitors a 6-0 advantage after the first quarter.

With 10:00 on the clock, the Jaspers used a free-position shot to get on the board, but UMass Lowell responded almost instantly with goals from Goldie and Shultz, extending the lead to 8-1.  Both sides proceeded to lock down on defense, as the score remained the same for well over six minutes, but with 1:22 on the clock, Manhattan struck once more, cutting their deficit to 8-2 heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, Manhattan took advantage of an early woman-up situation to make it a five-goal game with 14:20 on the clock. The River Hawks, however, would not let the goal go unanswered, scoring just over a minute later, this time off the stick of Catlin, to recapture the six-goal difference. Moments later, after a blocked shot landed in front of the opposing keeper, Ruscitti scooped the loose ball and launched a shot into the back of the net for her first career goal. Manhattan, though, countered with two goals in the final minutes of the period, making it a 10-5 game heading into the fourth.

Looking to mount a comeback, the Jaspers fired off six of the first seven shots of the final period. UMass Lowell was up to the challenge, holding Manhattan scoreless, while Goldie added her second goal and Catlin struck twice to claim the program's goal scoring record and to help her squad pull away and seal the 13-5 victory.

Next up, the River Hawks stay on the road as they take on the Merrimack Warriors on Wednesday, February 12. Opening draw is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Martone-Mejail Field.
