River Hawks Compete Hard at Day One of America East Indoor Championship, End the Day in Fourth

BOSTON, Mass. –
The UMass Lowell men's indoor track and field team competed in day one of the 2025 America East Indoor Championship on Saturday, finishing the day in fourth place as a team with 23.50 points.

Albany holds the lead with 51 points, while Binghamton trails them with 39 and New Hampshire sits in third with 32.

"The team competed very well, as always," said Head Coach Gary Gardner.

The 60m hurdles preliminary round was the first track event of the day, with both junior Tristan O'Riorden and sophomore Nidlaire Olivier (Lowell, Mass.) qualifying for tomorrow's final. O'Riorden came in fourth place with a personal-best 8.40 mark, with Olivier just behind him in fifth with a personal-best time of 8.41.

Three River Hawks qualified in the 400m dash, as freshman Michael Fisher (Wallingford, Conn.) claimed fourth with a personal-best 48.26 mark, while sophomore Anthony Massari (Dumont, N.J.) finished in sixth place with a personal-best time of 48.67 and O'Riorden made his second final with an eighth-place mark of 49.00.

In the 500m dash prelim, junior Basit Iddriss (Milford, Mass.) led the way with a second-place finish and personal-best 1:04.18 mark, before freshman Gabriel Sisk (West Hartford, Conn.) took fifth with a time of 1:04.72. In the 60m dash prelim, sophomores Evan Imasogie (Lowell, Mass.) and Daniel Kennedy (Tolland, Conn.) claimed the final two spots in the final, as Imasogie finished tied for sixth with a time of 6.89, while Kennedy claimed eighth with a 6.90 mark.

The 5,000m run was next, and the River Hawks compiled 13 total points from three different runners. Junior Sean Kennedy-Wonneberger (East Haddam, Conn.) led the way with a third-place finish and time of 14:11.01 for six points, while graduate student Hunter Marion (Templeton, Mass.) and senior Jan Wouter Van Den Akker (Groningen, Netherlands) combined for seven points with fifth and sixth-place finishes, respectively. Marion crossed in 14:15.22. while Van Den Akker put up a time of 14:18.68. Senior William Benoit (Fairhaven, Mass.) finished in ninth with a personal-best time of 14:22.05 as well, while graduate student Henry Farrington (Essex, N.H.) (16th, 14:55.89) and junior Nathanael Fondakowski (Pelham, N.H.) (19th, 15:01.30) also competed for the River Hawks.

"The men in the 5,000m were in a war and were excellent," said Gardner.

The 200m dash prelim followed, with the lone River Hawk finisher, freshman Michael Gyimah (Kumasi, Ghana), finishing 11th with a 21.82 mark. In the 4,000m distance medley relay, the team of senior Joseph Curran (Nashua, N.H.), junior Brett Earle (Baldwinville, Mass.), freshman Isaac Henderson and graduate student Paul Neilan finished fourth with a time of 9:58.63 to earn five points and close out the day's track events.

Graduate student Brandon Williams (Severn, Md.) earned a point for the team in the long jump with an eighth-place finish and 6.84m mark to kick off the field events for the River Hawks. Junior Derek Munroe (Tewksbury, Mass.) led the way in the pole vault, clearing 4.58m for a personal best and a share of fifth place and 3.5 points for the team. Graduate student Daniel Cuddy (Hudson, Mass.) finished tied for seventh with a 4.28m mark for one point, while freshman Sawyer O'Riorden (Stow, Mass.) also earned a 4.28m mark for a personal-best.

Senior Luke Stelmach (Sterling, Mass.) and Munroe competed in the heptathlon events for the UMass Lowell, finishing day one in first and second place, respectively, as Stelmach earned 2103 points and Munroe with 2098. In the 60m dash, Stelmach finished second with a personal-best 7.20 mark, while Munroe claimed fifth with a time of 7.29. Munroe led the way in the long jump, finishing fifth with a personal-best 6.14m jump, as Stelmach was just behind him tied for sixth with a leap of 6.05m.

The heptathlon shot put was next, as Munroe and Stelmach took the top two spots, respectively. Munroe threw to a distance of 13.52m, while Stelmach reached a personal-best 13.43m. In the high jump, Stelmach shined again, tying for second with a jump of 1.93m, while Munroe tied for fifth with a 1.78m mark to close out the first day of the heptathlon.

The squad will return tomorrow, Sunday, February 23 for Day Two of the event and will chase a championship victory.
