BOSTON, Mass. — As the 2025 season is officially underway, the women's track and field team looks to take part in their first meet of the year at the 2025 Suffolk Relays at the TRACK at new balance in Boston, Mass.
"Good first meet back," mentioned Head Coach Gary Gardner. "We came out healthy and competed well. Really looking forward to the next few weeks."
To begin, the running events started the day with the women's 60m hurdles prelim. Graduate student Alexandria Grasso (North Reading, Mass.) finished in fourth-place with a time of 8.80, lifting her to the final heat after qualifying. Other participants included senior Fleur Balogh De Galantha (Grafton, Mass.), junior Paige Murphy (Billerica, Mass.) and freshman Chloe Champagne (Brockton, Mass.). By her lone, Grasso would ultimately finish in fourth-place in the women's 60m hurdles with a mark of 8.85.
Freshman Meredith Feener (Walpole, Mass.) competed in the women's 60m dash prelim.
In the one-mile run, the River Hawks were able to have three runners burst into the top 10. Graduate student Mary Yount (Northampton, Mass.) earned an impressive fourth-place spot at a time of 5:08.40, with junior Raihana Yameogo (Dillsburg, Pa.) following behind in fifth-place at 5:12.77. Junior Miana Caraballo (Methuen, Mass.) finished in ninth with a mark of 5:19.62 as freshman Lauren Long (Lunenburg, Mass.) grabbed 13th at 5:27.62. Breaking the top 25, senior Delaney Swanson (Swanzey, N.H.) finished in 21st at 5:33.63, with sophomore Emma Eagan (Danvers, Mass.) crossing the line in 23rd at a time of 5:34.27. Rounding out the River Hawks were freshman Haley Evans (Glastonbury, Conn.) (33rd, 5:42.30), senior Vivian Mac (Randolph, Mass.) (34th, 5:42.78), and senior Kaitlyn Stevens (Oxford, Mass.) (46th, 5:53.13).
An exceptional 400-meter run from sophomore Jayani Santos (Tewksbury, Mass.) would help her obtain first-place at a time of 56.64. Freshman Anya Neira (Methuen, Mass.) would finish with a mark of 1:02.56, taking ninth. Following behind, freshman Brianna Phelan (Billerica, Mass.) earned 18th with a time of 1:07.22.
Boosting her way to the top, sophomore Katharine Cottone (Little Falls, N.J.) would cross the line in third-place at 2:23.81 in the 800-meter run.
In the 1000-meter run, junior Nia Mainer-Smith (Taunton, Mass.) led the way for the pack, finishing in fourth at a mark of 3:00.89. Staying attached, freshman Brenna Corcoran (Haverhill, Mass.) placed in seventh-place at 3:05.35 as sophomore Emily Burdick (Billerica, Mass.) finished in eighth at 3:07.12. Following behind were junior Kylie Maron (Baldwinville, Mass.) with a time of 3:09.49 in 11th, freshman Isabel McIntrye (Dover, N.H.) earning 20th at 3:19.95, and freshman Alyssa Fiorino (Billerica, Mass.) crossing the line in 32nd with a mark of 3:30.42.
The 200-meter run included Grasso who claimed seventh with a time of 25.76, while junior Danielle Thompson (Groton, Mass.) would finish in 17th at a mark of 26.87.
Sophomore Soria Roberts (Warwick, N.Y.) earned 11th with a time of 27.23 in the 200-meter open run. Murphy (16th, 27.56) and sophomore Bridget Geary (Lowell, Mass.) (17th, 27.58) also competed in the event.
The last running event of the day was the 3000-meter run where freshman Georgia Brooks (Groton, Mass.) claimed fifth-place for the River Hawks at a time of 10:39.79. Following behind were junior Mia Jones (Blacksburg, Va.) (20th, 11:25.77), freshman Selena Wood (Abington, Mass.) (24th, 11:31.40) and sophomore Lena Takahashi (Holden, Mass.) (28th, 11:38.54).
During the field events, the weight throw was the first event on the board for the women where senior Arlene Davila (Peabody, Mass.) earned 10th at a mark of 13.69m.
Grasso obtained sixth-place with a 5.26m mark in the long jump. Next up, sophomore Nethica Auguste (Bridgewater, Mass.) jumped to a mark of 4.85m for 12th and Murphy took 16th leaping to a mark of 4.71m.
In the pole vault, senior Jules Gravier (Bronxville, N.Y.) finished in 18th, rising to a 3.00m mark. The pole vault open consisted of senior Madison Sanchez (Amesbury, Mass.) earning 11th at a 2.80m mark, with freshman Jaden Kasule (Tewksbury, Mass.) finishing at a 2.65m mark for 15th.
Freshman Avery Pitts (Willington, Conn.) would soar to a top 5 finish, earning fifth-place with a 1.63m mark in the high jump. Behind them was Balogh De Galantha finishing in 16th at a 1.53m mark. Champagne jumped for a 1.35m mark for 12th in the high jump open.
The lone River Hawk in Auguste competed in the triple jump earning fifth for a 10.65m mark.
Concluding the field events for the meet, sophomore Nhyira Nkansah (Chelmsford, Mass.) cracked the top 10 earning ninth-place in the shot put at a mark of 11.59m. Also competing, Davila would finish the event in 13th with a mark of 11.16m.
Next up, the River Hawks will travel to Boston, Mass. on January 18 to compete in the Battle in Beantown at the Track and Tennis Center.
