River Hawks Fall To Massachusetts, 18-9, On Tuesday Afternoon

LOWELL, Mass. – Freshman Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) tallied three goals, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (10-4) fell to the Massachusetts Minutewomen (8-4), 18-9, on Tuesday afternoon at Cushing Field.
Bowers, who recorded her ninth hat trick of the season, was one of six River Hawks to score a point. Behind her, sophomore Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) chipped in with two goals. Meanwhile, senior Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.), junior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.), sophomore Audra Hansen (Stamford, Ct.), and freshman Jillian Goldie (Owen Sound, Ontario) all found the back of the net once. In net, freshman Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) made 11 saves, while junior Kendall Whalen (Belmont, Mass.) made two in relief.Â
The River Hawks got to work quickly, as Brockbank made a quick spin move to lose her defender before firing a shot past the keeper, putting her squad up 1-0 only 49 seconds in. Minutes later, junior Daia Hansford (Bowie, Md.) caused a turnover, giving UMass Lowell the ball and setting up Lydon to make it 2-0 with 10:33 on the clock. Although the Minutewomen countered with their first goal at 9:36, the hosts hit right back, this time off the stick of Bowers, extending their lead to 3-1 with just under nine minutes to play. The remainder of the period proved to be a defensive battle, highlighted by Kuhn making five saves, as the score remained 3-1 after one.
Both sides continued their lockdown defensive performances to begin the second, with the score remaining the same for over eight minutes. However, with 6:36 on the clock, Bowers broke the game's scoring drought, driving from over 30 feet out before burying her second of the afternoon, giving her team a 4-1 advantage. Despite the UMass Lowell defense holding the opposition off the board for nearly 25 minutes, they finally struck, stringing four goals together to jump in front, 5-4, at the break.
Coming out of the break, the Minutewomen used the momentum gained at the end of the half to add 11 goals in the third and take a 16-4 lead into the final quarter.
Looking to start a comeback, UMass Lowell got on the board early in the fourth with a goal from Lydon, cutting the lead to 11. A back-and-forth battle followed, with Catlin netting her first of the day between two goals by the visitors. In the final six minutes, Bowers, Hansen, and Goldie each added a goal, but the River Hawks couldn't get any closer, sealing the 18-9 decision.
Next up, the River Hawks return to conference play when they host the Bryant Bulldogs on Saturday, April 13.
