FAIRFAX, Va. – The UMass Lowell women's track and field team traveled to Virginia on Friday for day one of the Dalton Ebanks Invitational, hosted by George Mason.
"It was a good day overall," said Head Coach Gary Gardner. "The weather was better than at home, but it was a bit of a challenge. We had some good performances and the team really competed which was really fun to watch."
In the 400m hurdles, it was senior Ali Grasso (North Reading, Mass.) that led the way for the River Hawks, posting a personal-best time of 1:04.95 for fourth place. Freshman Katharine Cottone (Little Falls, N.J.) was next, taking 11th place with a personal record of 1:07.06.
Senior Madison Marsh (Dudley, Mass.) was the first River Hawk to cross the finish line in the 200m dash, earning a time of 25.85 for 16th place. Freshman Bridget Geary (39th, 27.07), Freshman Soria Roberts (42nd, 27.11), Sophomore Danielle Thompson (Groton, Mass.) (47th, 27.39) and sophomore Paige Murphy (Billerica, Mass.) (57th, 28.10) also competed in the race for UMass Lowell.
In the 800m race, sophomore Nubia Pereira (Woburn, Mass.) performed well, taking home ninth-place honors and a time of 2:16.95 in a race of 86 total finishers. Sophomore Nia Mainer-Smith (Taunton, Mass.) was next, finishing in 23rd place with a personal-best time of 2:20.76, while freshman Emily Burdick (Billerica, Mass.) made her 800m debut, finishing in 35th with a time of 2:23.93.
"The women's 800m crew all ran tactically well despite the windy conditions," said Gardner.
The 5k rounded out the running events for the River Hawks, and it was senior Hannah Doherty (Billerica, Mass.) that was at the front of the pack, finishing in 10th place out of 48 with a time of 18:05.09. Graduate student Arianna Braccio (Nashua, N.H.) was the next to finish, taking 28th place with an 18:59.29 mark, finishing just before sophomore Mia Jones (Blacksburg, Va.), who ran a personal-best time of 19:02.16 for 32nd place. Freshman Emma Eagan (Danvers, Mass.) also competed, finishing in 38th with a time of 19:21.82.
Senior Martina Nkwantah (Pepperell, Mass.) and graduate student Shataeya Smith (Malden, Mass.) got the field events started with the hammer throw. Nkwantah finished in fourth place with a distance of 48.56m, while Smith concluded the event in 15th with a personal-best 38.94m mark.
In the long jump, two River Hawks recorded marks, as senior Rebecca Crosier (Shaftsbury, Vt.) led the way with a seventh-place performance and reached 5.57m. Murphy earned herself a 4.82m mark to claim 21st place.
The squad will return to George Mason tomorrow, April 6, for day two of the Dalton Ebanks Invitational, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
