River Hawks Bounce Back With 20-7 Win Over Boston University

Story Links

LOWELL, Mass. – Junior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) scored a game-high seven points, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (9-3) cruised to a 20-7 victory over the Boston University Terriers (4-7) on Wednesday.

"Boston University is a good, well coached team we were excited to play," said Head Coach Lisa Miller. "Hoping to carry this momentum, mindset, and mental preparation into conference play as we move forward."

Catlin, who finished with four goals and three assists, was one of eight to score a goal for the River Hawks. Freshman Jillian Goldie (Owen Sound, Ontario) posted a game-high five goals, while sophomores Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) and Audra Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) each recorded a hat trick. Freshman Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) tallied two goals and two assists, while seniors Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.), Emerson Laundry (Swampscott, Mass.), and sophomore Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.) each chipped in with a goal. In net, freshman Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) made 14 saves while allowing only seven goals, good for a .667 save percentage.

The River Hawks got to work early on the offensive end with goals from Goldie, Hansen, and Bowers in the opening minutes to give their squad a 3-0 lead with 11:44 on the clock. The Terriers fired back with a goal off the stick of Elle Stevenson just over a minute later, but UMass Lowell could not be contained, stringing together seven straight goals, highlighted by two each for Hansen and Catlin, to take a commanding 10-1 lead with 2:53 remaining in the quarter. Although Boston University added one shortly after, Goldie completed her hat trick to take a nine-goal lead, 11-2, after one.

UMass Lowell continued the strong start into the second quarter, as Catlin found Lydon in front of the net for her second goal of the match. The defense continued to hold the opposition at bay before another goal by Lydon, this time with 8:03 on the clock, made it 13-2. The Terriers began to find their stride though, scoring three in a row to cut the deficit to 13-5 at the half.

The River Hawks extended their lead less than two minutes into the third when Catlin tallied her third of the evening. Despite a goal by the visitors moments later, UMass Lowell countered with a trio of goals from Goldie, Shultz, and Brockbank, to regain a double-digit lead, 17-6, with 9:38 to go. Both sides followed up with impressive defensive performances, as a lone goal by the Terriers marked the only score in the remainder of the quarter, giving the hosts a 17-7 lead heading into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, UMass Lowell continued to show its ability on both sides of the ball, starting with Goldie's fifth goal of the game, tying her personal best. Only a few minutes later, Catlin struck again, this time coming on a free position shot before Emerson Laundry found the back of the net for the first time this season. Meanwhile, the defense continued to lock down the opposition, holding the Terriers scoreless in the fourth to seal the 20-7 victory.

Next up, the River Hawks return to conference play when they head north to battle New Hampshire on Saturday, April 6.
