LOWELL, Mass. – Freshman Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) set the program record for most goals in a season, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (11-4, 2-2 AE) earned a hard-fought, 16-13 victory over the Bryant Bulldogs (8-5, 2-2 AE) on Saturday afternoon.

"I think the defense tightened up and played lockdown and adjusted to the rolling, which slowed them down considerably," said Head Coach Lisa Miller. "The offense came out on fire. I thought they did a nice job on that side. We're a little bit young, but I thought they did a nice job of handling pressure and managing the clock. That's a really good team win. I think it mucks things up in the America East which is always fun. It's a great team win all the way across the board.

Bowers, who now sits at 45 goals on the season, led the team with six points off four goals and two assists. Behind her, junior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) scored four goals alongside an assist, while sophomore Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) finished with a hat trick. Sophomore Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.) chipped in with two goals, while senior Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) and sophomore Mia Mitchell (Akwesasne, N.Y.) each added one. Between the pipes, freshman Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) made 14 saves in the victory.

Bowers wasted no time getting her team on the board, scoring on a free-position opportunity at the 13:22 mark, putting her team in front 1-0. Less than five minutes later, the UMass Lowell offense erupted, striking three times in just over a minute off the sticks of Brockbank, Lydon, and Bowers to own a 4-0 advantage with 7:26 on the clock. Although the Bulldogs added their first moments later, Shultz and Catlin went back-to-back, giving their squad the largest lead of the afternoon, 6-1, with three minutes to go. Bryant countered with eight seconds remaining in the first, cutting the hosts' lead to 6-2 after one.

The second quarter proved to be an offensive battle for both sides, started by two goals from the Bulldogs before a free-position goal from Bowers made it 7-4 just past the 10-minute mark. Bryant responded with their fifth midway through the quarter, but Lydon fired right back to keep her team's three-goal advantage. The visitors refused to stay quiet, scoring three of the next four goals to pull within one, 9-8, with 2:34 on the clock. A minute later, Mitchell tallied her first of the afternoon, but a last-second goal by the Bulldogs trimmed the River Hawks' lead to 10-9 heading into the break.

Despite a goal by Bryant to open the second half, the River Hawks locked down defensively, holding the opposition scoreless for the remainder of the period, thanks in part to three saves by Kuhn and a caused turnover by Brockbank. Meanwhile, the offense found its rhythm, as Bowers struck for the program-record 45th time this season, kickstarting a 4-0 run by UMass Lowell, including goals from Lydon, Catlin, and Goldie, to own a 14-10 edge heading into the final period.

The River Hawks picked up right where they left to open the fourth, scoring two goals, this time from Catlin and Shultz, to take a commanding 16-10 lead with nine minutes to play. The Bulldogs attempted to make a comeback, scoring three goals to cut the score to 16-13 with three minutes left, but the River Hawks fought off any more attempts, sealing the 16-13 victory.

Next up, the River Hawks hit the road to take on UAlbany on Saturday, April 20. Opening draw is set for noon at John Fallon Field.
