River Hawks' Comeback Effort Falls Short In 14-12 Loss to UMBC

Story Links

LOWELL, Mass. – Junior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) scored three goals, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (8-3, 0-2 AE) fell in the final minutes to the UMBC Retrievers (7-4, 2-1 AE), 14-12, on Saturday afternoon.

"I thought we started a little slow," said Head Coach Lisa Miller. "We knew exactly what was coming, and we thought we were well-prepared, but they attacked us for some goals early. We managed to crawl our way back into it. I think for us, we have growing pains. We have to learn how to win and to cut out some of the silly stuff."

Catlin, one of six goal scorers for the River Hawks, tallied her career-high sixth hat trick of the season. Joining her, freshman Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) also contributed three goals while senior Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) and sophomore Audra Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) each found the back of the net twice. Sophomore Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) and freshman Jillian Goldie (Owen Sound, Ontario) chipped in with one goal each. In net, freshman Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) made 12 saves.

Although the Retrievers started the game strong offensively by scoring four goals in the opening five minutes, UMass Lowell was up to the challenge, keeping the opposition off the board for the remainder of the first quarter. Meanwhile, the offense fired off a flurry of shots, and despite a handful of saves by the visitors' goalkeeper, Catlin struck on a free-position shot to get her squad on the board, 4-1, with 5:06 on the clock. The River Hawks continued to control possession, while Kuhn made two saves to keep the score the same after one.

With momentum on their side, UMass Lowell struck early in the second, this time off the stick of Bowers, to cut the deficit to two. The Retrievers fired back, scoring their first goal in over 16 minutes to retake a three-goal advantage, 5-2, with 9:09 on the clock. Moments later, Catlin found her second goal of the afternoon, but UMBC fired off five straight to take a seven-goal edge before Lydon found the back of the net in the final seconds, making it 10-4 at the break.

The Retrievers opened the scoring in the second half, finding their eleventh goal just under a minute and a half in. The hosts' defense locked down immediately after, holding UMBC scoreless for nearly the rest of the third. Only three minutes later, Goldie worked her way around the defense and ripped a shot past the keeper, igniting the offense to a four-goal run, including goals from Hansen, Bowers, and Catlin, to make it 11-8 with 1:15 remaining. The visitors, however, found one more in the final 30 seconds to own a 12-8 lead with one quarter remaining.

UMass Lowell continued its hot second half in the fourth, scoring the first three goals, highlighted by two straight from Brockbank, to make it a one-goal game, 12-11, with 6:17 on the clock. UMBC countered with two of their own, extending their advantage to three before a free-position goal by Bowers made it 14-12 with just over two minutes to play. Looking to pull off the comeback, the River Hawks peppered the opposing goalie with three shots in the final moments but ran out of time, sealing the 14-12 final.

Next up, the River Hawks face a quick turnaround as they host Boston University on Wednesday, April 3. Opening draw is set for 4:30 pm at Cushing Field.
