Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

River Hawks Fall To Binghamton, 14-9, In Conference Opener

VESTAL, N.Y. – Sophomore Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) tallied a career-high three goals, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (8-2, 0-1 AE) fell to the Binghamton Bearcats (5-6, 1-1 AE), 14-9, on Saturday afternoon.

"I think the pressure of conference play may have impacted our start and how we handled momentum shifts," said Head Coach Lisa Miller. "We tightened up in the third when the draws weren't going our way and began to do things that have been uncharacteristic for this group – unforced errors, penalties, poor execution, and mental mistakes. We need to do more work on the mental part of the game going forward."

Tying Lydon with three points, freshman Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) finished the day with two goals and an assist. Senior Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) and sophomore Audra Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) each added a goal and an assist. Meanwhile, sophomore Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.) and freshman Marlee Green (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) each found the back of the net once. In net, freshman Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) finished with five saves.

Although the Bearcats tallied two goals in the first five minutes, the River Hawks retaliated instantly, using back-to-back goals from Bowers and Brockbank to even the score, 2-2, with 8:06 on the clock. After a goal by the hosts with 5:39 to play made it 3-2, UMass Lowell's offense caught fire, striking three times in three possessions, including two from Lydon, to take a 5-3 advantage heading into the second quarter.

The start of the second proved to be a defensive battle, as both sides held each other scoreless for nearly seven minutes. The visitors broke were first to break the scoring drought with 8:19 left in the half when Brockbank dished a pass to Bowers, who fired a shot past the keeper for her second goal of the afternoon. Moments later, Lydon converted on a free-position shot, securing the hat trick while giving her squad a 7-3 edge midway through the quarter. The Bearcats refused to back down, adding two goals to cut the River Hawks' lead to 7-5 heading into the break.

Binghamton started the third quarter strong, scoring four goals by the 11:30 mark to jump in front, 9-7. The River Hawk defense stepped up to the challenge, forcing multiple turnovers to keep the opposition off the board for seven minutes. However, with 3:47 to go, the Bearcats struck to make it a three-goal game before adding two more to own a 12-7 advantage after three.

Trying to rally for a comeback victory, the River Hawks cut the deficit to four after a woman-down goal by Hansen, her first of the game. Although Gabriella Meli extended her team's lead to 13-8, UMass Lowell countered with a free-position goal by Green with five minutes remaining. Binghamton, however, added one more with 2:29 on the clock, sealing the 14-9 decision.

Next up, the River Hawks return home for the first time in over a month when they play hosts to the UMBC Retrievers on Saturday, March 30. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m. at Cushing Field.
