River Hawks Fall, 15-14, in Hard-Fought Battle at No. 23 Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) scored a team-high four goals, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (8-1) fell in the final minutes to the #23 Brown Bears (6-2), 15-14, on Saturday afternoon.
"A tremendous effort by the entire team in the week prior to the game and today," said Head Coach Lisa Miller. "We were solid across the board against a ranked opponent and played with confidence. The game was physically demanding and we'll need everyone's help to get ready for conference play."
Bowers, who added two ground balls and a draw control, was one of four multi-goal scorers for the River Hawks. Junior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) was all over the box score, tallying three goals, three ground balls, and four draw controls. Sophomore Audra Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) added three goals, while sophomore Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.) chipped in with two goals. Rounding out the goal scorers, senior Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) and sophomore Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) each contributed with a goal. In net, freshman Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) made nine saves.
It didn't take long for the River Hawks to get on the board, as Catlin found the back of the net just over 30 seconds into the match. Under two minutes later, UMass Lowell doubled their lead with a free-position goal by Bowers, but the Bears responded with haste, using a 2-0 burst to even the score at 2-2 with 10:30 on the clock. Despite back-to-back goals from Hansen and Catlin giving the visitors the lead again, Brown's offense surged, putting up six straight for an 8-4 advantage with two minutes remaining in the first. With 18 seconds remaining, Hansen struck again, cutting the lead to three heading into the second.
Although the Bears added another with 12:34 on the clock, UMass Lowell locked down the opposition with incredible defensive play, allowing only two shots and zero goals through the remainder of the half. Meanwhile, the offense began to find its rhythm again as Bowers, Catlin, and Brockbank all drilled shots past the hosts' keeper, cutting the lead down to one, 9-8, heading into halftime.
Coming out of the locker room, the River Hawks picked up right where they left off when Brockbank dished a pass to Shultz, who buried her shot for her first of the day. Moments later, Lydon struck before Shultz scored again, putting their squad ahead, 11-9, with just under nine minutes on the clock. With 4:59 on the clock, the hosts finally struck again, ending the nearly 23-minute drought that the UMass Lowell defense had enforced. The visitors quickly regained their two-goal edge though, as Bowers completed her hat trick to put her side up 12-10 heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth, the Bears shifted momentum in their favor, stringing together four straight in eight minutes to jump in front, 14-12. Looking to pull off the upset victory, the River Hawks continued to fight, using a free-position goal by Bowers to make it a one-score game with 4:47 on the clock. Both sides added a goal in the final 4:30, and although the River Hawks found themselves in a woman-up situation with under a minute to go, there was not enough time to even the score, sealing the 15-14 final.
Next up, the River Hawks will finish their six-game road trip when they head to Vestal, New York, to open conference play against the Binghamton Bearcats. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m. at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
