River Hawks Complete Fourth Quarter Comeback to Take Down Quinnipiac, 11-9

HAMDEN, Ct. – Freshman Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) scored a game-high five goals to help mound a fourth-quarter comeback as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (5-0) took down the Quinnipiac Bobcats (0-2), 11-9, on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the River Hawks continue their best start in program history and remain tied for the best record in the nation.

"It was a good defensive game, and Alexa Kuhn played lights out," said Head Coach Lisa Miller. "We managed to even out the draw control and scored and competed when we needed to. We'll have to play a better team offense going forward."

Bowers added two assists for a career-high seven points, and was one of six goal-scorers for the River Hawks. Senior Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) finished with two goals and a caused turnover. Junior Megan Milkowich (Watertown, N.Y.), sophomores Audra Hansen (Stamford, Conn.) and Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.), and freshman Jillian Goldie (Owen Sound, Ontario) all chipped in with a goal. In net, freshman Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) finished with a career-best 16 saves in 60 minutes.

Quinnipiac started the game strong, scoring the first goal of the afternoon on only their second possession, but the River Hawks proved to be up to the challenge, as Brockbank and Bowers tallied back-to-back goals in under a minute to take a 2-1 lead with 8:32 on the clock. UMass Lowell's offense stayed hot, as Bowers ripped a free-position shot past the Bobcats' goalie moments later to take a two-goal advantage. Quinnipiac countered quickly with two goals before the four-minute mark, but Goldie tallied her lone goal on the afternoon to put her squad in front, 4-3, heading into the second.

The River Hawks defense locked down to begin the second quarter, holding the opposition scoreless for nearly seven minutes, highlighted by three saves from Kuhn. The Bobcats, however, broke through with a two-goal burst to take a 5-4 lead midway through the second. With 3:33 on the clock, junior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) found Shultz open to knot the game up, and although Quinnipiac added one more, Bowers completed the hat trick with 33 seconds to send the two sides into the locker room tied up, 6-6.

Coming out of the half, UMass Lowell continued to emphasize their defense, as they forced four turnovers, and Kuhn made three saves over ten minutes of play to keep the hosts off the board. With 4:13 remaining in the third, Brockbank ended the scoring drought with her eighth goal of the season, putting the River Hawks back in front by one. Quinnipiac, though, wouldn't back down, adding two goals to head into the fourth quarter with an 8-7 lead.

Looking to pull off the comeback, the River Hawks took advantage of a green card by the Bobcats, striking with 13:33 on the clock off the stick of Milkowich. Less than a minute later, Quinnipiac returned the favor, scoring on a woman-up situation to retake the lead. The score didn't change for nearly half the quarter, but with just over five minutes to play, the UMass Lowell offense began to find its rhythm with a goal by Hansen to even the score. On their next possession, the River Hawks used a timeout to craft a gameplan, setting up Bowers to score the go-ahead goal. The Wisconsin native stayed hot, finding one more goal with 1:04 on the clock to seal the 11-9 victory.

Next up, the River Hawks head south to take on Winthrop for the first time in program history on Sunday, March 3. Opening draw is set for 12 p.m. at Eagle Field in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
