River Hawks Battle to 13-9 Victory Over Stonehill

LOWELL, Mass. – Junior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) and freshman Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) each tallied three goals, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (4-0) earned a hard-fought, 13-9 victory over the Stonehill Skyhawks (0-1) on Wednesday afternoon at Cushing Field.
Right behind Catlin and Bowers, freshmen Marlee Green (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) and Jillian Goldie (Owen Sound, Ontario) each recorded two goals, with Goldie also adding an assist. Rounding out the scoring, sophomore Audra Hansen (Stamford, Conn.) totaled a goal and assist, while senior Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) and sophomore Mia Mitchell (Akwesasne, N.Y.) each chipped in with a goal. In net, freshman Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) earned her first career start, making six saves in 60 minutes of action.
The start of the game proved to be a defensive battle, as neither side could find the back of the net for over seven minutes of play. The River Hawks broke through first though, when Bowers snuck a shot past the keeper to put her team in front with 7:30 on the clock. Although Stonehill responded moments later, the UMass Lowell offense countered with an explosive attack with four goals from Catlin, Bowers, and Brockbank in under three minutes, putting their squad on top, 5-1, after the first quarter.
The River Hawks continued to play lockdown defense entering the second quarter, as Kuhn made a save on a free position shot only 30 seconds into the period. With momentum on their side UMass Lowell raced down the field before Goldie ripped a shot past the goalie, extending the lead to five. The hosts continued to dominate on both ends of the field with goals by Catlin and sophomore Mia Mitchell (Akwesasne, N.Y.), while the defense totaled eight caused turnovers. The Skyhawks, however, were able to capitalize on a scoring opportunity with five seconds on the clock, cutting the lead to 8-2 heading into the break.
It didn't take long for UMass Lowell to extend the lead back to seven, as freshman Marlee Green (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) tallied her second-career goal with 13:53 to play in the third. Moments later, Hansen and Goldie scored back-to-back goals in under 20 seconds, lifting the River Hawks to an 11-2 lead, before Catlin scored her third of the afternoon for a double-digit lead. Despite the deficit, Stonehill refused to back down, using a 3-1 edge in the final 2:30 to pull back within eight, 13-5, heading into the final quarter.
In the final period, the Skyhawks looked to make a comeback, starting with two goals in the first five minutes. The River Hawks stayed resilient, though, allowing only two goals in the final ten minutes of play to hold on for the 13-9 victory.
Next up, the River Hawks will head out on a six-game road trip, starting with a match at Quinnipiac on Saturday, February 24. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m. at Quinnipiac Lacrosse Stadium.
