River Hawks Keep Rolling with 14-10 Win Over LIU

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Junior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) and sophomore Audra Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) each tallied three goals and an assist, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (3-0) battled to a 14-10 victory over the LIU Sharks (0-2) on Saturday morning.

With the win, the River Hawks improve to 3-0, continuing the best start in program history.

"LIU is a well-coached and competitive team that pushed us to be resilient and aggressive," said Head Coach Lisa Miller. "We responded well to a few setbacks and were able to pull away in the third. Proud of the way we competed when it was hard."

Tying Catlin and Hansen with four points, freshman Jillian Goldie (Owen Sound, Ontario) scored twice while adding a game-high two assists. Senior Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) and freshman Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) continued their hot starts to the season, adding two goals plus an assist and three goals, respectively. Rounding out the goal-scorers, sophomore Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) chipped in with a goal. In net, three keepers split time, with junior Kendall Whalen (Belmont, Mass.) making seven saves in the first half, freshman Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) making five saves in 29 minutes in her debut, and junior Jillian Schumacher (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) finishing the game off with one save.

The game proved to be a defensive battle early on, as both sides remained scoreless for over six minutes. The River Hawks broke through first with 8:56 on the clock, as Brockbank found Catlin open to put their squad in front 1-0. Both defenses continued to battle, but with just over four minutes to go, the Sharks found their first scoring opportunity of the morning, knotting the game up 1-1. However, Catlin quickly retaliated with her second of the game, putting UMass Lowell up 2-1 after the first.

Although LIU struck first in the second, UMass Lowell wasted no time responding, as Brockbank found the back of the net 20 seconds later, and Catlin followed with her third goal to take a 4-2 lead with 9:56 on the clock. The next eight minutes were a back-and-forth battle, as each side found two goals, with the two for the River Hawks coming off the stick of freshman Jillian Goldie (Owen Sound, Ontario). In the final minute, the Sharks used a quick 3-0 burst to take a 7-6 lead into the break.

Coming out of halftime, the River Hawks used a perfect defensive performance to dominate both sides of the ball in the third quarter. Only 20 seconds into the third, Bowers scored her first goal of the day before Hansen added one of her own, putting her team back in front, 8-7. With momentum on their side, UMass Lowell's hot offense kept rolling as Lydon, Bowers, and Hansen all added another goal. Kuhn, meanwhile, made three saves as the River Hawks used the 5-0 run to take a four-goal advantage, 11-7, into the fourth.

The Sharks started the final quarter with an early goal, cutting the deficit to three as they looked to make a comeback. The River Hawks were quick to shut their attempts down, though, as Brockbank and Bowers fired off back-to-back goals to take a commanding 13-8 lead with seven minutes to play. LIU continued to battle, scoring two more goals in the final minutes, but a late score by Hansen sealed the 14-10 decision.

Next up, the River Hawks return home to host the Stonehill Skyhawks on Wednesday, February 21. Opening draw is set for 3:30 p.m. at Cushing Field.
