Giesing and Doyle Close Out NCAA East Prelims on Saturday

5/27/2023 9:29:00 PM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Both graduate student Izzy Giesing (Bradford, Vt.) and senior Kenzie Doyle (Swansea, Mass.) competed on Saturday evening for a chance to punch their tickets to June's NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas.

Giesing was the first of the pair to run, taking part in the 800m quarterfinals after advancing on Thursday. She ran a solid race against some of the best competition in the country, finishing 23rd with a 2:09.09 mark.

"Izzy was in a good position with 350 to go, but got tripped up a bit and never recovered," commented Head Coach Gary Gardner. "Tough way to get knocked out of qualifying."

This ends an extremely impressive season for Giesing, who was an America East Individual Championship in the 1,500m (4:22.73), a 400m winner at the Friar Invitational (55.86) and a third-place finisher at the Virginia Challenge in the 800m (2:03.81).

Doyle competed in the late-evening 5K, after already qualifying for the NCAA Championships in Thursday's 10K, finishing seventh with a 33:53.23 mark. She put up an amazing effort, finishing 32nd with a time of 16:27.30. She just missed out on the double qualification, but her impressive season is still alive.

"Kenzie's section got out hot," said Gardner. "She was 5:03 at the mile looking great. 800 meters later, the 10K really settled into her legs. She ran tough, but just nothing left in her legs."

The 2023 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships will begin on Wednesday, June 7, with Doyle's women's 10K event going off on Thursday, June 8.
