River Hawks Fall to Binghamton, 16-8, on Senior Night

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (6-9, 0-5 AE) fell to the Binghamton Bearcats (10-5, 5-1 AE), 16-8, at Cushing Field on Saturday night. Prior to the game, the seven members of the Class of 2023 were all honored in a Senior Day ceremony.
Leading the way in scoring were seniors Molly Shaw (Marshfield, Mass.) and Grace Hansen (Stamford, Conn.) who tallied two goals each. Also finding the back of the net were seniors Izzy Liquori (Agawam, Mass.), Anna Bauter (Dexter, N.Y.), sophomore Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.), and freshman Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.), who each chipped in with a goal. Frshman Audra Hansen (Stamford, Conn.) paced the squad with two caused turnovers. Freshman Hannah Shaddock (Corning, N.Y.) and junior Jillian Schumacher (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) each saw time in net, making 10 saves and one save, respectively.
The River Hawks' offense was rolling early, as Shaw tallied two goals in the opening three minutes, giving her squad a 2-0 advantage. Binghamton then matched the defensive presence of UMass Lowell, as both teams did not allow a goal for over five minutes. The Bearcats, however, broke their scoring drought, finding the back of the net with 7:20 on the clock. Three minutes later, the River Hawks retaliated as Catlin scored on a free-position shot, but the visitors added two more to even the score, 3-3, after one quarter.
The hosts opened the second quarter with a strong offensive attack, as Bauter collected a pass from freshman Audra Hansen (Stamford, Conn.) and fired a shot past the keeper a minute in. The Bearcats quickly fought back, striking twice before the 11-minute mark to take their first lead of the afternoon. Following a penalty by Binghamton, UMass Lowell took advantage of the woman-up situation, as Grace Hansen picked up her first goal of the evening. With the score tied at 5-5, the Bearcats put together a three-goal scoring run, taking an 8-5 lead into halftime.
After the visitors added another goal to extend their lead to four, Liquori capitalized on a free-position opportunity, finding her first goal of the night to pull the hosts back within three. UMass Lowell continued to battle, but Binghamton's defense held the River Hawks scoreless while adding three more of their own to take a 12-6 lead into the final quarter.
In the fourth, the River Hawks fought, with goals from Lydon and Grace Hansen, but the Bearcats added four of their own, holding off any comeback opportunities and sealing the 16-8 final.
Next up, the River Hawks will hit the road to wrap up their season when they take on the Vermont Catamounts at Virtue Field on Saturday, April 29, at noon.
