Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

River Hawks Fall at UMBC, 18-9

BALTIMORE, MD. – Senior Grace Hansen (Stamford, Conn.) and junior Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) each tallied a hat trick as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (6-8, 0-4 AE) fell to UMBC (7-5, 1-3 AE), 18-9, on Saturday afternoon.

Alongside her three goals, Brockbank added an assist to lead the squad with four points. Senior Izzy Liquori (Agawam, Mass.) totaled two goals, while sophomore Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) chipped in with a goal and an assist. Senior Molly Shaw (Marshfield, Mass.) added an assist to round out the River Hawks' points. Defensively, Brockbank and sophomore Daia Hansford (Bowie, Md.) each caused a turnover, and junior Emerson Laundry (Swampscott, Mass.) led the team with five draw control victories. In net, freshman Hannah Shaddock (Corning, N.Y.) made ten saves.

The River Hawks started the game strong, dominating possession while forcing the Retrievers into an early clock violation. With 10:28 on the clock, with both sides still scoreless, Brockbank dished a pass to Liquori who fired a shot past the keeper, giving the River Hawks a 1-0 lead. After four minutes of a back-and-forth battle, Catlin raced around the back side of the net and fired a shot into the back of the net, giving UMass Lowell a two-goal buffer. However, UMBC did not back down, going on a 3-1 stretch in the final five minutes to tie the game, 3-3, after one quarter.

Although a goal by Grace Hansen only 51 seconds into the second had her team back in front, the hosts responded swiftly, striking twice in under two minutes to take a 5-4 lead, their first of the afternoon. With 8:17 to play in the first half, Brockbank tallied her second goal of the afternoon, knotting the game up 5-5, before Grace Hansen struck again, putting the River Hawks back in front. Moments before halftime, the Retrievers retaliated with back-to-back goals to take a one-goal lead heading into the break.

At the start of the third period, following four minutes of a defensive battle, the Retrievers began to attack aggressively, tallying three goals in under three minutes to take a 10-6 lead. Following a three-hour weather delay, the hosts picked up right where they left off, adding four more goals in the quarter. With 2:19 remaining, Grace Hansen picked up her third goal of the day to make it 14-7 heading into the fourth.

Although the River Hawks continued to battle in the fourth quarter, UMBC outscored the visitors, 4-2, to secure the 18-9 victory.

Next up, the River Hawks return home to take on Binghamton on Senior Day on Saturday, April 22, at 6 p.m.
