River Hawks Suffer 15-11 Setback Against New Hampshire

Story Links

LOWELL, Mass. – Senior Molly Shaw (Marshfield, Mass.) recorded four goals as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (5-4, 0-1 AE) fell to the New Hampshire Wildcats (2-5, 1-0 AE), 15-11, on Saturday afternoon at Cushing Field.

Alongside Shaw, freshman Audra Hansen (Stamford, Conn.) tallied four goals while adding two ground balls and a caused turnover. Junior Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) added two goals, while senior Abby McLaughlin (Walpole, Mass.) chipped in with one. Defensively, junior Emerson Laundry (Swampscott, Mass.) caused three turnovers, collected three ground balls, and totaled two draw controls. In net, freshman Hannah Shaddock (Corning, N.Y.) made nine saves.

The River Hawks' defense was put to the test early as the Wildcats dominated possession and kept the ball on the offensive side of the field. Although UMass Lowell's defense fought against the pressure for over two minutes, New Hampshire eventually struck with 12:24 on the clock. Still on the attack, the Wildcats added four more goals in under five minutes to take a 5-0 lead. The remainder of the quarter proved to be a defensive battle, but Audra Hansen found the back of the net with 1:40 to play, cutting the lead down to 5-1 heading into the second quarter.

After a yellow card put New Hampshire in a woman-up position, the visitors added another goal to go up by five again. This time, however, UMass Lowell struck right back, as McLaughlin fired a shot past the keeper with 11:32 on the clock. Both teams then locked down defensively, with neither squad able to get on the board for nearly six minutes. New Hampshire ended the scoreless drought with 5:37 remaining, but Audra Hansen and Brockbank quickly went back-to-back to cut the lead down to three. The Wildcats added two more of their own, taking a 9-4 lead into the break.

Coming out of halftime, the visitor's struck early, scoring in their first possession to take a 10-4 lead. The Wildcats added another minutes later to stretch the margin to seven, but UMass Lowell went to work on offensive, firing off two rapid goals from Brockbank and Shaw. Both teams scored once more in the third to make it a 12-7 game heading into the final quarter.

After a goal by the Wildcats extended their lead to 13-7, the UMass Lowell offense exploded, putting together a three-goal stretch in just over three minutes to cut the deficit down to 13-10 with 8:37 remaining. With momentum on their side, the River Hawks continued to fire off shots, but two more goals by New Hampshire thwarted the hosts comeback attempt.

Next up, the River Hawks hit the road to take on new conference opponent Bryant on Saturday, March 25. Opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Beirne Stadium.
