3/16/2023 11:01:00 AM

BOSTON—Graduate students Izzy Giesing (Bradford, Vt.) and Emily Sessa (Tewksbury, Mass.) have been tabbed to the 2023 America East Indoor Track & Field All-Academic Team, as announced by the conference Thursday morning.

Binghamton and Vermont led the way with three nominees, followed by the River Hawks with two. UAlbany, Maine and New Hampshire each had one honoree.

Giesing earned her spot on the AE All-Academic Team for the fourth time in her career. A four-time America East Commissioner's Honor Roll selection, Giesing has maintained a 3.811 GPA during her graduate studies in Engineering Management. In addition to being a 2020 NCAA DI USTFCCCA All-Academic selection, Giesing has also appeared on the Dean's List every semester since enrolling at UMass Lowell.

A standout in the middle distance, Giesing capped her indoor career with another slew of milestones to add to her resume. The Vermont native not only captured the 2023 AE Indoor title in the women's 800 meters but also helped the women's 4x800m relay team and the distance medley team capture first. After her impressive performance at conference, Giesing returned to the oval to turn in a personal-best 2:02.35 finish to punch her ticket once again to the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Making her first career appearance on the AE All-Academic Team, Sessa has been excelling off the track in her studies, posting a 3.403 GPA in pursuit of her master's in business. Sessa has also earned two America East Commissioner's Honor Roll selections and an America Eat Honor Roll nod during her time in the Mill City.

Sessa played a pivotal role this year in helping the UMass Lowell women's squad capture their first-ever America East Indoor Championships. Sessa was named the 2023 AETF Most Outstanding Track Performer after picking up two individual titles in the 1,000m and mile as well two relay titles (4x800, DMR) to finish with an astonishing 25 individual points. For her efforts, Sessa was also recognized as the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week (Feb. 21).

The River Hawks hope to pick up right where they left off as the team transitions to the outdoor campaign next week at the Raleigh Relays and the UMass Lowell Invitational.
