Giesing Runs to All-American Honors at NCAA Championships

3/10/2023 9:30:00 PM

ALBUQUERQUE—Graduate student Izzy Giesing (Bradford, Vt.) of the UMass Lowell women's track and field program capped her indoor season on Friday night at the 2023 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Lining up for an incredibly competitive women's 800-meter race, Giesing clocked a 2:06.72 time to finish twelfth overall. Using her experience from last year's trip to the NCAA Championships, Giesing ran a steady race to finish fifth in her heat.

"Izzy ran a smart race," commented Head Coach Gary Gardner. "The race itself went out fast, but it slowed down lap two. After that, Izzy put herself in a great position, but just didn't close as a few others in her section."

Giesing not only improved her performance from last year's semifinal run, but she also earned Second Team All-American status for the second time, becoming the second-ever River Hawk to achieve the feat since elevating to Division I.

"The race didn't go as planned, but I learned a lot," commented Giesing on her second appearance at the NCAA Championships. "Overall though, I'm very happy to have had the opportunity to represent Lowell on the national stage. I'm very excited to see how outdoors will go."
