River Hawks Set To Take on Merrimack, Holy Cross

LOWELL, Mass. – Looking for their first win of the season, the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (0-1) will head to North Andover to take on the Merrimack Warriors (0-1) Wednesday afternoon, before a clash with the Holy Cross Crusaders (0-1) in the home opener on Sunday afternoon.  
 
LAST TIME OUT
UMass Lowell enters the weekend with a 0-1 record after falling to #23 Massachusetts, 16-7, in the 2023 season opener. Leading the River Hawks in scoring was senior Izzy Liquori (Agawam, Mass.), who tallied two goals and an assist. Also finding the back of the net twice were senior Molly Shaw (Marshfield, Mass.) and sophomore Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.), while senior Grace Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) chipped in a goal. Also getting on the scoresheet was freshman Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.), who assisted on Hansen's goal for her first collegiate point. Making her first career start, junior Emerson Laundry (Swampscott, Mass.) paced the squad with five total draw controls. In net, freshmen Hannah Shaddock (Corning, N.Y.) totaled 13 saves in her debut.

LEADING THE FLOCK
Izzy Liquori, Molly Shaw, and Jade Catlin all pace the River Hawks with two goals scored, while Liquori and Macy Shultz each lead the squad with one assist. Emerson Laundry boasts five draw controls, while senior Julia Napolitano (Oakdale, N.Y.) leads the defense with three draw controls and four ground balls collected. In net, Hannah Shaddock leads the team with 13 saves.

SCOUTING MERRIMACK
The Warriors enter Wednesday's game with an 0-1 record following a 17-7 loss to Boston University. Midfielder Olivia Valdes was all over the box score, tallying two goals and two assists for four points while adding two draw controls and causing two turnovers. Also making a big contribution to the offense was midfielder Sophie Scearbo who recorded one goal and two assists for three points. In net, Hayley Kowalczyk faced 33 shots, making eight saves for a .320 save percentage.
 
SCOUTING HOLY CROSS
The Crusaders opened the season with a 13-10 loss to Fairfield and will face off with Bryant prior to Sunday's game. In the clash against Fairfield, midfielder Ella Kittredge scored three goals and added an assist for a team-high four points. Right behind her, midfielder Christine Fabrizi and attack Isabela Miller both tallied three points. In net, Tori Cini faced 30 shots, making 11 saves for a .458 save percentage.
 
A WIN WOULD
A win would be the River Hawks first of the season and move them to a 1-1 record.
 
MERRIMACK MATCHUP HISTORY
The River Hawks and Warriors have matched up twice, with UMass Lowell holding a 2-0 record. Last season, the River Hawks posted a 15-6 win, behind four goals from Molly Shaw and Abby McLaughlin.
 
HOLY CROSS MATCHUP HISTORY
Holy Cross and UMass Lowell have faced off three times, with the Crusaders holding a 2-1 advantage. The last time out, Holy Cross won 13-6 during the 2022 season. In that match, Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) paced the squad with three points off two goals and an assist.  
 
CONFERENCE HONORS
Following a 13-save performance in the season opener, goalkeeper Hannah Shaddock was named the America East Rookie of the Week on February 13.
