BETHLEHEM, Pa.—The UMass Lowell women's cross country team tested their talents Friday morning at the 2022 Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh, battling through a highly-competitive field to finish 38th in the Women's College Gold 6K.
"Overall, we were pleased with our performance," said Head Coach
Gary Gardner following the meet. "We knew without three of our more experienced runners it was going to be a challenge in such a competitive race. It was still a great experience for them."
Making her 2022 debut, senior
Kenzie Doyle (Swansea, Mass.) positioned herself as a major contender for the River Hawks this season with a top-20 performance. In a field of 417 competitors, Doyle's explosive performance landed her 16th overall.
"Kenzie ran well today. Her performance sets her up to have a chance to qualify for NCAAs and enter the hunt for All-American status," commented Gardner.
In addition to her outstanding outing, Doyle crossed the line in a personal-best 19:57 to take three seconds off her previous fastest time.
"This race was extremely competitive this year. I am incredibly proud of my teammates for staying tough and working together. We usually build up from this point in the season, so I am excited to see how the rest of this season goes once we race all our women together," said Doyle following the race. "I am happy with my performance today, and I cannot wait to see what the season holds."
Doyle and the River Hawks return to action next weekend at the New England Championships at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.
