DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore
Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) tied a season-high with four points as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (2-8, 0-2 AE) fell to the New Hampshire Wildcats (6-4, 1-0 AE), 12-7, on Saturday afternoon.
"I thought our defense played well today," remarked head coach
Lisa Miller. "We limited the number and types of opportunities, and Alex made some saves to keep us close."
Junior
Molly Shaw (Marshfield, Mass.) led the River Hawks with three goals. Brockbank added in three assists and a goal, while junior
Izzy Liquori (Agawam, Mass.) added in two goals of her own. In net, graduate student
Alex Salim (East Islip, N.Y.) recorded 12 saves in 60 minutes of action.
Despite both defenses holding strong early in the game, the Wildcats got on the board first, tallying two goals in the first seven minutes of play for an early lead. However, Shaw and sophomore
Kaitlin Tobin (Southold, N.Y.) would tally back-to-back goals midway through the first to tie the game up at two. With 50 seconds remaining in the period, Shaw tallied her second goal of the game, giving the River Hawks a 3-2 lead heading into the second quarter.
The River Hawks battled hard in the second quarter but struggled to find their footing as the Wildcats tallied four straight goals to take a 6-3 lead with three minutes left in the half. With 55 seconds remaining in the half, Shaw fired one past the goalkeeper off the assist from Brockbank, giving her the hat trick and making it a 6-4 game heading into the break.
Coming out of the half, the Wildcats found a quick goal, extending their lead to three with 14 minutes remaining in the quarter. Four minutes later, Liquori fired a shot into the net, pulling the River Hawks back to within two. New Hampshire would tack on one more goal for an 8-5 advantage heading into the final quarter.
After the Wildcats extended their lead to four, Liquori found the back of the net off a free position goal to get the River Hawks back on the board. With just over 12 minutes remaining UMass Lowell continued to gain momentum as Brockbank fired a shot into the back of the net while falling to the ground, cutting the lead down to two. The Wildcats answered with a three-goal scoring run to finish the game.
Next up, the River Hawks will return home to take on UMBC on Saturday, April 2, at 12 p.m.
