INDIANAPOLIS—Senior
Izzy Giesing (Bradford, Vt.) of the UMass Lowell women's track and field team has qualified for the 2022 NCAA Division I Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships, as announced by the NCAA Track and Field and Cross Country Committee on Tuesday night.
"Izzy has been performing at a consistently high level all season with personal bests at every distance she has raced," remarked Head Coach
Gary Gardner. "She has been close to breaking through on the national stage, so it's great to see her get there."
Giesing is the second River Hawk to qualify for the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships. Her teammate graduate student
Kaley Richards (Lowell, Mass.) became the first, competing in the mile last year. This year's championships, hosted by the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the City of Birmingham, will take place March 11-12 at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama.
With a time of 2:03.95 in the 800 meter run, Giesing is seeded 13th going into next weekend's competition. The preliminary round for the women's 800 meter is set for Friday, March 11, at 7:45 p.m. with the final slotted for Saturday, March 12, at 7:30 p.m.
"Getting the 2:03.95 time was a long time coming. She has been in the low 2:04 range all season, so it's great to see her breakthrough on Sunday," commented Gardner. "The indoor NCAAs is by far the toughest NCAA meet to qualify for."
Live coverage of the 2022 Championships will air on ESPN3 starting at 11 a.m. (EST) on Friday and 11:30 a.m. (EST) on Saturday. For more information, please visit the UAB Blazers Championship Central
