River Hawks Fall to Quinnipiac, 15-11

3/12/2022 5:00:00 PM

Box Score
HAMDEN, Ct. –  Freshman Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) scored a career-high five goals, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (2-6, 0-0 AE) fell to the Quinnipiac Bobcats (4-2, 0-0 MAAC), 15-11, on Saturday morning.

Alongside Catlin's five goals, junior Izzy Liquori (Agawam, Mass.) tallied three goals and added in 10 draw control victories. Juniors Molly Shaw (Marshfield, Mass.) and Grace Hansen (Stamford, Ct.), as well as redshirt freshman Emily Stratton (Camillus, N.Y.) all added in a goal of their own for the River Hawks.

In net, graduate student Alex Salim (East Islip, N.Y.), sophomore Jillian Schumacher (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and freshman Kendall Whalen (Belmont, Mass.) all split time, with Salim leading the three goalies with four saves over 34 minutes of action.

After the Bobcats opened the game with an early goal, Catlin quickly responded with a goal of her own, tying the game at one. Despite both teams finding the back of the net within the first four minutes of play, the first quarter proved to be a strong defensive showing, as the Bobcats would only score two more goals, giving them a 3-1 lead heading into the second quarter.

The River Hawks' offense started fast to begin the second, as Liquori raced past the Bobcats' defense and fired one past the goalie only thirty seconds into the quarter, cutting Quinnipiac's lead to one. Over the next few minutes, the two teams would exchange two goals each, giving the Bobcats the slight edge, 5-4, with 10 minutes remaining in the period. The scoring barrage would be put to a halt, as neither team would go on to score until Quinnipiac tallied its sixth goal with one second remaining in the half.

The second half began with the Bobcats tallying three consecutive goals, to take a 9-4 lead. The scoring run was stopped by Liquori, who was able to fire one past the keeper for her second goal of the game. Liquori and Catlin would go on to add another goal each during the quarter, but Quinnipiac was able to score a handful of goals of their own, giving them a 12-7 lead heading into the fourth.

The final quarter showed the River Hawks' resilience, as Catlin tallied three goals and Shaw earned her first of the game, but the four goals were not enough to make the comeback before the clock expired.

Next up, the River Hawks will begin conference play when they take on Vermont at Cushing Field on Saturday, March 19, at 3 p.m.
