KINGSTON, R.I. – Looking to continue their early season success, the UMass Lowell track and field team took on the Sorlein Invite, hosted by Rhode Island, on Saturday at the Mackal Fieldhouse.
For the men, junior
Evans Oduro (Kumasi, Ghana) led the way for the River Hawks, as he took home first in both the long jump and the triple jump. In the weight throw, graduate student
Patrick Pang (Peabody, Mass.) took fifth with a throw distance of 17.72 meters.
The River Hawks came out strong in the 60-meter dash, with junior
Michael Blake (Hudson, Mass.) finishing second and senior
Elie Kalambay (Lynn, Mass.) placing sixth.
The 400-meter dash was the best event for the River Hawks on the day, having three members finish in the top seven. Junior
Thomas Jordan (Needham, Mass.) recorded a time of 50.28 seconds to win the event, while senior
Kashief Bogannam (Kingston, N.H.) was only a second behind to finish in third. Graduate student
Joseph Gaudreau (Wilmington, Mass.) rounded out the pack with a time of 51.59 to finish seventh.
In the 800-meter run, graduate student
Derek Holmes (Marshfield, Mass.) recorded a time of 1:56.64 to finish in second, and graduate student
Christopher Alfond (Ashby, Mass.) turned in a time of 1:58.40 to earn a seventh-place finish.
The River Hawks continued to find success in the collection of running events, as graduate students
Daniel Cosgrove (Boxford, Mass.) and
Noah Bellomo (Hudson, N.H.) took fourth and fifth in the 1000-meter run, while senior
Drew Everett (Amesbury, Mass.) finished third and freshman Jan Wouter Van Den Akker (Groningen, Netherlands) took seventh in the mile.
The men finished strong, with freshmen
Nick Melisi (Natick, Mass), TJ Glowik (Danvers, Mass.),
Timothy Brigham (Holden, Mass.) and
Graham Stedfast (Rowley, Mass) taking second, third, sixth and seventh, respectively in the 3000-meter event. Lastly, the team of Cosgrove, junior
William Cole-French (Hanoi, Vietnam), graduate student
Liam Kimball (Atkinson, N.H.) and senior
Joseph Young Jr. (Shrewsbury, Mass.) took home second in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 8:00.25.
On the women's side, the River Hawks had multiple first place finishes. Graduate student
Lauren Eddy (Grafton, Mass) won the 400-meter dash after she finished in just under a minute. Meanwhile her teammates, senior Isabella Giesing (Bradford, Vt.) and graduate student
Kaley Richards (Lowell, Mass.), took first in the 500-meter and 1000-meter runs, respectively.
In the mile, graduate student
Jenna Solimine (Haverhill, Mass) came in with a time of 5:03.39, good for fifth, while freshman
Sarah Ross (Agawam, Mass.) finished in 5:11.71 for an eighth-place finish.
In the pole vault, senior
Rachel Hill (North Reading, Mass.) finished in fourth. Leading the team in the triple jump was sophomore
Alexandria Grasso (North Reading, Mass.), who finished fifth, while sophomore
Wonuola Ashaju (Lagos, Nigeria) took seventh.
Rounding out the events for the women, sophomore
Martina Nkwantah (Pepperell, Mass.) finished fourth in the shot put, and senior
Olivia Sheffield (Lowell, Mass) finished second in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:28.77.
Next up the River Hawks will head to Boston to compete in the Boston University Multi Team Meet on Saturday, January 22.
