BOSTON, Mass. – Senior
Jenna Berger (Waterloo, Ontario) matched a career high with a pair of goals to lift the UMass Lowell field hockey team (2-1) to a 4-0 victory on the road at Boston University (2-3) on Friday evening.
"This was a fantastic team effort tonight against a solid BU team," said Head Coach
Shannon LeBlanc. "We are very happy with our performance. We played with purpose and energy, and took care of the detail pieces of the game."
The River Hawks were sharp on both sides of the ball to earn the shutout win. Berger now leads the team with three goals on the young season. Classmate
Lara Ansaldi (Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina) finished with a goal and assist for three points on the night, while sophomore
Mirthe Gans (Tiel, Netherlands) rounded out the goal scorers. On the defensive end, sophomore goalkeeper
Eleonore Boekhorst (Bilthoven, Netherlands) totaled three saves in her second shutout of the year. As a team, the River Hawks outshot the Terriers, 10-6, with a 6-4 advantage on corners.
The visitors got the on the board during a corner less than four minutes into play, as Ansaldi pushed a pass towards the post that met the stick of a perfectly-positioned Berger for the tip-in. UMass Lowell then extended its margin to 2-0 in the 27
th minute when Gans slapped home a second-chance opportunity on another corner.
The River Hawks put more pressure on their hosts following the break. In the first two minutes of the second half, senior
Hannah Keefe (Westford, Mass.) charged through the circle and fired from short range, but BU's Kate Thomason made an incredible stop.
However, UMass Lowell would still double its margin in the fourth quarter. In the 46
th minute, junior
Berbel Rozema (Rotterdam, Netherlands) stole the ball from a defender and sent a laser from long distance toward the cage that was redirected by Berger. Six minutes later, Ansaldi then sealed the 4-0 victory with a turnaround shot from out by the top of the circle.
The River Hawks will now look to carry the momentum into a 1 p.m. tilt against Hofstra on Sunday, September 12.
