LOWELL, Mass.—The UMass Lowell Athletic Department announced this week that its student-athletes earned a department-wide GPA of 3.35 during the 2021 spring semester. The River Hawks have earned combined departmental GPAs of 3.0 or higher for 17 straight semesters, including all 15 semesters since elevating to Division I in 2013.
Twelve of the River Hawks' 14 programs posted a GPA of 3.0 or better this semester, including seven teams who achieved a 3.5 mark or higher.
"We are so proud to see our student-athletes rise to the occasion, overcome adversity and perform remarkably in the classroom during these unprecedented times," commented Director of Athletics
Peter Casey. "The classroom achievements are incredible, especially when considering how their academic instruction methods changed due to the pandemic. However, their discipline and effort in taking care of their studies help make these successes happen. It's also due to the great work of academic services and coaching staff and who supported our student-athletes along the way."
In total, 43 student-athletes recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA in the spring semester, with an additional 299 River Hawks earning above a 3.0.
On the men's side, the River Hawk hockey squad led all teams with a 3.67 GPA, while the women's cross country team earned the top mark amongst all the women's programs as well as the department with a 3.69 GPA.
