ALBANY, N.Y. – Although the score was tied for over 60 minutes of game action, the UMass Lowell field hockey team (5-4, 3-3 AE) eventually succumbed to UAlbany, 2-1, in double overtime on Saturday.
"Overall, we are happy with our performance today," said Head Coach
Shannon LeBlanc. "Losing in overtime stinks plain and simple. Today was our sixth game in two weeks with the last three being on the road, and three of the last four overtime games. It's been a challenging stretch, but this team loves playing hockey with each other so much, they are squeezing every minute they can out of every game."
The game-winner came in the 77
th minute when the Great Danes' Katie MacCallum put an initial shot on target that was knocked away by freshman goalkeeper
Eleonore Boekhorst (Bilthoven, Netherlands) before Lara Mortz finished off the rebound.
Sophomore
Berbel Rozema (Rotterdam, Netherlands) registered the River Hawks' lone goal in the contest for her second tally of the season, while senior
Clara Defourt (Brussels, Belgium) logged her team-best third assist. Boekhorst made six stops in the cage in the double overtime effort.
"I continue to be impressed by this young team's skill, execution and ability to make in-game changes," added LeBlanc. "We are looking forward to a couple recovery days so that we can be reenergized for next week's important conference game."
The Great Danes opened the scoring in the final seconds of the first quarter, as Robyn Murray connected on a direct corner.
The River Hawks responded early in the second when Rozema found the back of the cage with the helper from Defourt to knot the game at 1-1.
The stalemate ensued and the UMass Lowell defense fended off eight, second-half shots from UAlbany to force overtime. The home team then earned back-to-back corners in the first overtime, but the River Hawks held the line.
Halfway through the second, 10-minute extra period, Rozema got a shot off, but it sailed just wide before the Great Danes connected to earn the win.
The River Hawks will be back home on Friday, April 9 when they host New Hampshire on Senior Day.
