HARTFORD, Conn. – Sophomore
Izzy Liquori (Agawam, Mass.) recorded a career-high six goals as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team battled Hartford to a 18-10 victory at Al-Marzook field on Saturday afternoon.
The River Hawks improve to 4-7 overall, including a 3-5 mark in America East. While the Hawks fall to 0-8 overall and in league action.
Liquori led the River Hawk offense with her six goals and one assist, while classmate
Molly Shaw (Marshfield, Mass.) notched three tallies and one assist of her own. Freshman attacker
Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) collected three helpers, including the tenth goal of her rookie campaign for four points on the day.
The River Hawk offense got started early, with Liquori going unassisted in the first minute of the contest. Although, the home squad would answer on consecutive tallies over the next seven minutes to grab a slight 2-1 advantage.
Both sides would equalize the score on three more occasions, thanks to tallies by Shaw and junior
Samantha Blair (West Islip, N.Y.), including a man-up opportunity by sophomore
Grace Hansen (Stamford, Conn.). However, the back-and-forth action was short lived, as the River Hawks would tack on three-straight to close out the first half for an 8-5 scoring edge.
Liquori wasted no time in the second, completing her hat trick just 29 seconds in. Shaw,
Abby McLaughlin (Walpole, Mass.) and
Anna Bauter (Dexter, N.Y.) would put up goals of their own to pull in front 12-6 by the 18-minute mark. Hartford would add two more to their total late in the game to hit double digits, but the River Hawks would secure shots of their own in the final 30 seconds by Shaw and McLaughlin to secure the 18-10 win.
UMass Lowell finished with a commanding 41-25 performance in overall shots and a 33-18 lead in shots on goal. The River Hawks were most dominant at the draw circle, leading 21-8, while holding a slight 23-26 buffer in turnovers. Sophomore
Caroline Klim (Wrentham, Mass.) scooped up a team-high six ground balls and
Layton Nass (Manhasset, N.Y.) added four of her own. Nass, Gabby Torian (Glen Burnie, Md.) and
Hana Caster (North Attleboro, Mass.) each forced two turnovers.
Sophomore
Madison Grazidei (Bayport, N.Y.) and freshman
Mackenzie Brown (Southington, Conn.) split their time in the crease for the visitors, each tallying four saves on the day.
The River Hawks will close out the regular season next weekend against Vermont, as they take on the Catamounts on their home field Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m.
