STONY BROOK, N.Y.—Four River Hawks found the back of the cage in today's America East battle, but the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team ultimately came up short, falling 20-4 against Stony Brook. With today's loss, the River Hawks drop to 1-4 (0-2 America East) on the season, while the Seawolves improve to 5-2 (2-0 AE).
Stony Brook took an early lead in Sunday's tilt, opening with four unanswered goals from four different Seawolves. Junior
Samantha Blair (West Islip, N.Y.) struck first for the River Hawks, earning a goal off a free position shot at 8:31. Less than a minute later, a Stony Brook turnover off the draw forced by graduate student
Hana Caster (North Attleboro, Mass.) helped make way for sophomore
Abby McLaughlin (Walpole, Mass.) to cut the Seawolves lead to 4-2.
Stony Brook responded with eight goals over 15 minutes, before sophomore
Anna Bauter (Dexter, N.Y.) halted the Seawolves momentum with a goal from the feed by freshman
Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.). Stony Brook closed out the half with a final shot to move to 13-3 as both teams headed to the break.
Despite the River Hawks taking a 5-4 edge in draw controls in the second half, the Seawolves continued to apply pressure, scoring seven unanswered goals with two goals apiece from Taryn Ohlmiller and Jaden Hampel. With 3:31 left to play, sophomore
Izzy Liquori (Agawam, Mass.) scored on the man-up opportunity to add a tally for the River Hawks and cut the final score to 20-4.
Between the pipes, freshman
Mackenzie Brown (Southington, Conn.) made eight saves and tied senior
Gabby Torain (Glen Burnie, Md.) with a team-high three ground balls.
Liqouri registered six draw controls and six shots on goal in today's contest, just one short of her season high in both categories. On defense, Torain and Caster led the River Hawks with two caused turnovers each.
The River Hawks return to Cushing Field on Saturday, March 20, when they host America East opponent Hartford. Opening draw is set for 5 p.m.
