ORONO, Maine – Senior
Jenna Berger (Waterloo, Ontario) broke open the scoring late in the first half, but it was not enough, as the UMass Lowell field hockey team (8-6, 1-5 AE) was topped, 2-1, in overtime at America East leader Maine (11-6, 6-1 AE) on Friday afternoon.
"Overall, we are happy with our performance today," said Head Coach
Shannon LeBlanc. "We possessed the ball well and did a great job taking care of the basics. To take the No. 1 team in the conference to overtime tells me we are committed to the process and performing at a high level. We were just a little unlucky in the overtime."
Berger's goal marked her sixth of the year, tying for first on the squad. Sophomore
Eleonore Boekhorst (Bilthoven, Netherlands) totaled eight stops in the decision, as well.
The River Hawks threatened to get on the board in just the 10
th minute on their first corner chance of the day. On that play, freshman Maxine van Havere (Wilrijk, Belgium) took a hard shot from the wing, but the Black Bears' Mia Borley made a diving stick save.
Berger converted on the squad's next corner in the 22
nd, collecting a loose ball and slotting home a second-chance opportunity to put the visitors on top, 1-0. However, the home team would knot it up before the break on a redirect by Hana Davis.
Boekhorst and the UMass Lowell back line fended off five Maine attempts in the second half to force overtime. The difference-maker then came on a Black Bear corner in the 62
nd minute off the stick of Brooke Sulinski.
The River Hawks will return to action on Tuesday, October 26 when they host Harvard in a battle under the lights at 7 p.m.
