Five River Hawks earn America East Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award

LOWELL, Mass. – Five UMass Lowell student-athletes have been honored with the America East Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.

A total of 72 America East student-athletes have been named America East Presidential Scholar-Athletes highlight their outstanding academic achievements throughout their standout collegiate careers.

The award recognizes graduating student-athletes who compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher as an undergraduate student and earned their undergraduate degrees this year. In addition to registering a 3.75 GPA for their college career, honored student-athletes must have received their undergraduate degree in the academic year they are honored and have attended their institution for a minimum of two years.
 
McKenna Bova (Corona, Calif.; Biology) and Katherine Claybaugh (Alamo, Calif.; Political Science/Spanish) from the River Hawk Volleyball team were honored, as well as Eva Berkhout (Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands; Clinical Lab Studies) from the UMass Lowell Field Hockey team.  Stefan Borovac (Stoney Creek, Ontario; Business Administration - Finance) from the River Hawk Men's Basketball team also earned the distinction, along with Justin Carbone (Exeter, N.H.; Plastics Engineering) from the UMass Lowell Men's Cross Country/Track & Field team.

"These student-athletes represent the best of the America East Conference," said commissioner, Amy Huchthausen. "To achieve a cumulative 3.75 GPA while balancing the rigors of being a Division I student-athlete is truly impressive and we commend them on their achievement."

The Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award was approved by the America East Board of Presidents in June of 2013 and implemented for 2013-14 academic year. In total, 421 elite student-athletes have been honored as part of the program.
