River Hawks Drop 4-3 Heartbreaker in Overtime at Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. – Despite leading by one with less than two minutes to play in regulation, the UMass Lowell field hockey team (4-4) dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker in overtime at Dartmouth (3-5) on Sunday afternoon.

"We played a really good hockey game," said Head Coach Shannon Hlebichuk. "Great ball movement, some awesome field goals from Grace (Davis) on the forward line and a well-executed corner. So I'm happy overall with our play, but with the result, not super happy. Obviously, some bad luck with a slip and a mistouch that changed the outcome for us. We just didn't have luck on our side today."

UMass Lowell led, 3-2, in the final minutes until Dartmouth's Holley Cromwell intercepted a pass off a misstep and found the back of the cage to force overtime. The home team then tallied the game-winner just over four minutes into the overtime period off the stick of Katie Spanos.

Sophomore Grace Davis (Waterloo, Ontario) logged her first two goals of the season and a career-best five total points to pace the River Hawks' offensive effort, while freshman Sofie Knook (Amsterdam, Netherlands) added her team-best fourth goal of 2019. Â

The River Hawks converted on a corner opportunity late in the first quarter to jump out to a 1-0 edge, as Davis inserted to graduate student Leah Cardarelli (Acton, Mass.) for the pass over to Knook, who fired on target.

The Big Green scored the equalizer in the 19th minute, but senior Morgan Irons (Bordentown, N.J.) would push a centering pass to Davis for the one-timer on cage to put the visitors on top, 2-1, at the break.

Davis added her second of the day in the 38th minute, finishing a rebound, although the Big Green closed the gap to 3-2 in the 43rd before mounting a late comeback for the 4-3 decision.

Dartmouth now leads the all-time series against UMass Lowell, 9-2. The River Hawks open America East Conference action on Friday, October 4 beginning at 3 p.m.
