NEW YORK, N.Y. –
Senior Anouk Lalande (Brussels, Belgium) tallied her first two goals of the season, as the UMass Lowell field hockey team (4-3) earned a 2-1 victory at Ivy League opponent Columbia (3-3) on Sunday afternoon.

"We are super proud of the team's performance," said Head Coach Shannon Hlebichuk. "This was a collective effort from all players today and a great win over a fast and disciplined Columbia team. Our team recognized some adjustments that needed to be made and it showed in the result."

A closely-contested match, the sides traded nine shots apiece. Senior Eva Berkhout (Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands) turned away five of the Lions' attempts to help lead the visitors to their third straight win.

The River Hawks, who controlled the first quarter with a 7-2 shot advantage, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute, as Lalande finished a rebound off an initial shot from sophomore Jenna Berger (Waterloo, Ontario).

Columbia was able to answer in the second, though, converting on its first of four corner opportunities in the period when Isabella Collins redirected a ball on cage in the 24th minute to send the teams into the break knotted at 1-1.

The difference-maker came late in the third, thanks to a diving backhand pass from freshman Berbel Rozema (Rotterdam, Netherlands) that was tipped in by Lalande from the left side.

The Lions accounted for the only two shots in the fourth and final quarter, but they were unable to convert, as the River Hawks secured the 2-1 decision.

UMass Lowell now leads the all-time series against Columbia, 2-1. The team will return to action next Sunday, September 29 when it visits Dartmouth for a 2 p.m. tilt.
