Box Score
EVANSTON, Ill. – Freshman
Sofie Knook (Amsterdam, Netherlands) recorded her first two career goals, including one inside the final two minutes of regulation, to lift the UMass Lowell field hockey team (2-3) to victory in a neutral-site contest against Ball State (2-4) on Sunday afternoon.
Â
"Today was all about getting the win and we did that," said Associate Head Coach
Katie White. "We are pleased with the team's mentality, and their fight and mindset at the end of the game to score a much needed goal."
Â
With the game tied at 1-1 with just over a minute and a half remaining, the River Hawks converted on a penalty corner opportunity. On that play, sophomore
Jenna Berger (Waterloo, Ontario) inserted the ball to classmate Linsey Kilpatrick (Manlius, N.Y.), whose stick stop allowed Knook to fire on cage and score the difference-maker.
Â
The River Hawks controlled possession for the majority of the contest, outshooting the Cardinals, 20-3, with an 11-1 advantage on corners.
Â
UMass Lowell jumped out to a quick, 1-0 lead in just the fourth minute of play when Knook finished a pass from fellow freshman
Berbel Rozema (Rotterdam, Netherlands).
Â
Graduate student
Leah Cardarelli (Acton, Mass) and sophomore
Grace Davis (Waterloo, Ontario) each put a shot on target in the second quarter, although the Cardinals' keeper was able to make the stops.
Â
Coming out of the break, Ball State put its first shot on goal late in the third, but sophomore goalkeeper
Rose Cuozzo (Wilmington, Mass.) knocked it away. However, the Cardinals did knot the score at 1-1 with just over four minutes to go in the fourth with a goal from Michelle Shampton. Knook followed with the game-winner, though, to end the contest in regulation.
Â
UMass Lowell now leads the all-time series against Ball State, 2-0. The River Hawks will return home to host Sacred Heart on Friday, September 20 at 3 p.m.
