Stanley Alves and Kristi King Named to America East Helping Hands Team

LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore defender Kristi King (Severn, Md.) of the UMass Lowell Women's Lacrosse team and senior forward Stanley Alves (Minas Gerais, Brazil) of the River Hawk Men's Soccer team were two of eighteen student-athletes from America East institutions were named to the conference's 2019 Helping Hands Team that was announced on Thursday evening at the conference's annual awards dinner.

The America East Helping Hands Team, in its sixth year, was established to recognize a male and female student-athlete from each of the nine America East institutions for their exemplary efforts in the area of community service, while remaining in good academic standing.

Alves served as one of the men's soccer service leaders, as he was always coordinating the program's community outreach and finding organizations for the players to volunteer at, including multiple stints at local food pantries. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) member also spent his free time serving at the Community Christian Academy and helped at the annual Wellness Walk.

King and Alves never missed an opportunity to volunteer their time at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell, and King would also head to local elementary schools to read to the students.

Each institution, at its discretion, selects a male and female representative to be recognized annually by the America East Conference. The winners represent nine different sports are a mix of classes with five seniors, seven juniors, four sophomores and freshman being honored.

The America East Conference provides its member schools and their athletic programs a platform upon which student-athletes can achieve both collegiate and life success through the promotion and nurturing of athletic excellence, academic achievement and leadership, on and off the field.
