LOWELL, Mass. – In its final competition of the 2019 season, the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (4-12, 1-5 AE) will take on Hartford with a chance to earn its second conference win on Saturday, April 27 at 3 p.m. at Al-Marzook Field.
Last Time Out
The River Hawks stood strong at UMBC last weekend, but eventually fell in an 11-5 decision.
Gabby Torain (Glen Burnie, Md.) scored her first career goal in a thrilling coast-to-coast solo play, while K
ristina Keith (East Kingston, N.H.) and
Kendyl Finelli (Southborough, Mass.),
Paige MacEachern (Lynnfield, Mass.) and
Samantha Blair (West Islip, N.Y.) each added goals of their own. UMass Lowell was within three goals with five minutes remaining, but the Retrievers closed out the game on a three-goal run to earn the victory.
Scouting Hartford (1-15, 0-6 AE)
The Hawks are in their second season as a lacrosse program and are seeking their first conference win of 2019, with their sole victory of the season coming against Delaware State. Sophomore Megan Miller has notched 18 goals and 10 assists on the season, but Hartford has had a balanced scoring attack, with 18 different players scoring at least one goal. Goalkeeper Emma Privitera enters the game with a 15.96 GAA and .471 save percentage.
Series History
The River Hawks first faced Hartford last season, earning a dominant 16-1 victory. MacEachern and Finelli each netted two goals, while
Kyra Lowenberg (Amherst, N.H.) and
Caitlin Sanborn (Chelmsford, Mass.) scored their first career goals. The game also marked a milestone moment for
Noelle Lambert (Londonderry, N.H.), who scored a goal in her first game back with a prosthetic leg.
Renee Gonzalez (Long Valley, N.J.) held down the fort in the second half, allowing just one goal.
Senior Legacy
In their final home game of 2019, the River Hawks honored their 10 seniors, who—as a group—have racked up 274 goals, 182 assists, 304 draw controls, 416 ground balls and 191 caused turnovers during their time at UMass Lowell. On Senior Day, they combined for 11 goals, six assists, six ground balls, five caused turnovers and 12 draw controls in the team's 19-18 win against Vermont.
America East Picture
Stony Brook remains the only undefeated team in America East with a 6-0 record, while New Hampshire and UAlbany are both 5-1. UMass Lowell is tied for sixth with Vermont. MacEachern is in the top seven in the conference in points and goals per game, while
Keith is fourth in shots per game and Finelli is eighth in assists per game. Hana
Caster (North Attleboro, Mass.) and Torain are in the top 10 in America East in caused turnovers per game.
Goal Power
The River Hawks have 155 goals in 2019 (9.69 per game), which breaks the previous program record of 153 for goals in one season. Twelve different River Hawks have scored goals this season, while 13 have tallied at least one point.
Controlling the Draw
Kelly Moran (Exeter, N.H.) and Caster are third and fifth in America East in draw controls with 4.81 and 3.63 per game, respectively. Moran is in the top 40 in the country in draw controls per game, as well.
Weekly Awards
Caster was named America East Defensive Player of the Week on March 11 after notching seven draw controls, six ground balls and eight caused turnovers through two games.
Renee Gonzalez (Long Valley, N.J.) took home weekly defensive honors on March 4, while Keith earned AE Offensive Player of the Week after a program-record, seven-goal game.
Record Breaking
Keith tallied seven goals against Holy Cross, a new program record. She now has 31 on the season (second on the team) and is in second place all-time in goals at UMass Lowell. Against Vermont, the River Hawks scored a program-record 19 goals, beating their previous high of 18.
Gonzalez In Goal
Renee Gonzalez allowed just five goals against Holy Cross, and then eight against Iona, her two lowest goals allowed totals on the season. She had a career-high, program-record 19 saves against New Hampshire and now has a 13.19 GAA and .409 save percentage in 2019 after playing every minute for the River Hawks.
M&M
MacEachern and
Cameron McKelvin (Westminster, Md.) have been offensive powerhouses this season. McKelvin had five goals at Fresno State, while MacEachern had six goals against Boston University a week later. MacEachern surpassed her 2018 goal total in just the first three games in 2019 and now has 39 goals on the season, which leads the team and has broken a program record for single-season goals. McKelvin has scored 27 goals on just 43 shots for a .628 shot percentage (seventh in the nation). Both McKelvin and MacEachern are now on the top-10 all-time goals list at UMass Lowell.
Solo Scoring
UMass Lowell has scored 76 unassisted goals this season, 20 of those coming from MacEachern.
Under Pressure
The River Hawks had a season-high 11 caused turnovers at Boston University, three of them from Torain. Through four games, Torain exceeded her caused turnover total from last year and now has 16. Caster leads the way with 21.
Milestone Watch
Moran tallied four draw controls against Colgate, tallying her 100
th career draw control in the process. She is already at the top of the record books in all-time draw controls with 154. Caster moved into second place all-time in draw controls at Wagner, now with 107. At Boston University, Finelli hit the 100-point mark and is now first all-time in scoring with 120 points.
Win Streak
UMass Lowell notched a three-game win streak from Feb. 27 through March 5, with victories against Holy Cross, Iona and Merrimack. That was the longest win streak since the River Hawks won six straight in March of 2017.
