River Hawks Face 20-3 Setback at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (3-8, 0-2 AE) struggled against a strong Stony Brook squad (5-4, 2-0 AE) on Saturday afternoon at LaValle Stadium, falling 20-3.
"We had focused all week on how to continue the focus and momentum from the Albany game, but it took us an entire half to get back to that today," said Head Coach Carissa Medeiros. "Stony Brook definitely proved why they are a top-20 team."

Stony Brook jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the first half. UMass Lowell outscored Stony Brook 3-1 in an 11-minute span from the end of the first half into the beginning of the second half, though, starting with Samantha Blair (West Islip, N.Y.) who scored with just under two minutes left in the first. Blair received a pass from Hana Caster (North Attleboro, Mass.), who drove in and passed it out to Blair to score.

Paige MacEachern (Lynnfield, Mass.) scored first in the second half with an assist by Kendyl Finelli (Southborough, Mass.), and Kristina Keith (East Kingston, N.H.) added one at 20:53.

The Seawolves attack proved to be too much though, as 12 different Stony Brook players scored, led by Siobhan Raffery with four goals.

MacEachern's goal marked her 26th of 2019—she leads the team in goals and points. Cameron McKelvin (Westminster, Md.) had her 13-game scoring streak snapped but tallied at least two shots in a game for the ninth time this season. Caster led the way in draw controls with five, Keith and Gabby Torain (Glen Burnie, Md.) each had two ground balls, and Renee Gonzalez (Long Valley, N.J.) made eight saves in the game. Lauren Katayama (Park Ridge, Ill.) made her first career appearance for the River Hawks.

The River Hawks are back at home on April 3 at 4 p.m. against New Hampshire at Wicked Blue Field.
