LOWELL, Mass. – After a cross-country trip to California to open the 2019 season, the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team returns to the East Coast for a matchup at Boston University at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16 at Nickerson Field.
Last Time Out
Despite dropping games to Fresno State and UC Davis, the River Hawks had a number of notable performances in California, including two hat tricks by Kristina Keith and (East Kingston, N.H.) and a five-goal game by Cameron McKelvin (Westminster, Md.). Paige MacEachern (Lynnfield, Mass.) tallied four goals and three assists over the weekend, while Kelly Moran (Newfields, N.H.) had eight draw controls at Fresno State, a new program record for a single game.Â
Scouting Boston University
The Terriers dropped their season opener against Boston College, 20-6. Senior Kelly Mathews and sophomore Ava Barry each had a pair of goals, while freshman goalkeeper Kennady Smith made five saves in the matchup.Â
Series History
The River Hawks are looking for their first win against the Terriers, having faced them twice in the past. The 2018 matchup featured a 14-10 BU win in the River Hawks' season opener, but Kendyl Finelli (Southborough, Mass.) tallied four points while Jane Dudley (Duxbury, Mass.) and Hana Caster (North Attleboro, Mass.) also added points.
Milestone Watch
Finelli is just three points away from the 100-goal mark, while Moran is eight draw controls away from 100. Moran is at the top of the record books in all-time draw controls with 92, while Finelli is second all-time in scoring with 97 points, needing just 13 more to reach first place.
A New Era in Goal
With the graduation of Courtney Barrett, Renee Gonzalez is holding down the fort at goalkeeper. Gonzalez appeared in 10 games in 2018 with a .432 save percentage and 11.08 GAA. She has played every minute this season, with a 14.50 GAA.
McKelvin's Big Game
McKelvin had five goals at Fresno State, just one short of the single-game record at UMass Lowell, held by Caster and Rebecca Idson. McKelvin's previous career high was four goals in a game. She has now moved onto the top-10 all-time goals list at UMass Lowell.
Strength in Seniors
The River Hawks boast a veteran squad with 10 seniors, a class that combined for 113 points in 2018.
Fresh Faces
UMass Lowell welcomes seven freshmen this season — Olivia Massena (Cicero, N.Y.), Lauren Hopsicker (Burnt Hills, N.Y.), Meredith Woo (Rochester, N.Y.), Lauren Katayama (Park Ridge, Ill.), Samantha Blair (West Islip, N.Y.), Julia Williams (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Ava Hoog (Ipswich, Mass.). Blair scored two goals in her first collegiate game at UC Davis, while Hopsicker added an assist.
Leading the Way
Seniors Dudley, Megan Albertsen (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), Renee Gonzalez (Long Valley, N.J.) and Kristina Keith (East Kingston, N.H.) are serving as captains this season.
