LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore Jenna Berger (Waterloo, Ontario) totaled a career-high five points to help propel the UMass Lowell field hockey team (5-5) to a 4-0 shutout against Colgate (2-10) on Sunday afternoon.

"Obviously when you score in the first minute, you feel really confident in how the tone was set early on," said Head Coach Shannon Hlebichuk. "I thought our performance overall from minute one to minute 60 looked very similar and that's what we were looking for today in playing a complete game."

Berger logged one goal, in addition to tying a Division I program record with three assists in the contest. Graduate student Leah Cardarelli (Acton, Mass.) registered her first goal of the year, in addition to one assist for three total points. Senior Morgan Irons (Bordentown, N.J.) and freshman Sofie Knook (Amsterdam, Netherlands) rounded out the goal scorers with one apiece. In the cage, senior Eva Berkhout (Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands) tallied two saves en route to her second shutout of the season.

The River Hawks pressured early and jumped out to a quick, 1-0 lead just over a minute into play, as Knook converted on the team's first corner opportunity of the day thanks to assists from Berger and Cardarelli.

The home team threatened to add to its margin in the 23rd minute, but a good defensive save by the Raiders' Emily Kness held the difference at just one. However, UMass Lowell was able to extend the buffer to 2-0 heading into the break when Irons finished a ball from Berger through traffic.

The River Hawks had a 2-0 advantage on corners in the third, pulling ahead, 3-0, on the second set piece in the 43rd minute on a tip-in by Cardarelli. The squad then added one more in the 48th on another corner, this time when sophomore Lindsey Kilpatrick (Manlius, N.Y.) dribbled along the far side of the circle before crossing a pass to Berger in the middle for the one-timer on target.
