BURLINGTON, Vt. – The UMass Lowell field hockey team (5-4, 0-2 AE) dropped a 1-0 decision at America East foe Vermont (4-6, 1-0 AE) on Friday afternoon.

"This loss was a result that was earned," said Head Coach Shannon Hlebichuk. "Credit to Vermont. They worked hard for 70 minutes and we only played hard for 35. In conference play, there cannot be any lapses in work rate. My hope is that we learned from today and will make the necessary adjustments for Sunday."

Vermont controlled the pace in the first half, taking a 10-2 shot advantage in the first 35. The River Hawks' defense was steadfast for the majority of the period, though, keeping the Catamounts off the board through their first eight corner chances. However, UVM would break open the scoring on their next attempt when Jackie Gillen received the ball at the top of the circle and ripped a shot that found the back of the cage, putting her squad ahead, 1-0, at the break.

The River Hawks regrouped at halftime and came out on the attack, outshooting the Catamounts, 5-2, in addition to taking a 5-2 edge on corners in the second. The visitors threatened with three straight corners beginning in the 54th minute, although they were unable to convert. Junior Anouk Lalande (Brussels, Belgium) then had a one-on-one opportunity with the opposing keeper in the final minutes, but the two collided and the ball rolled out of play, as Vermont was able to hold on for the 1-0 decision. Junior goalkeeper Eva Berkhout (Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands) totaled four saves in the decision, while sophomore back Clara Defourt (Brussels, Belgium) led the River Hawks with three shots. UVM took a 12-7 shot advantage in the match.

Friday's contest marked the 19th meeting between UMass Lowell and Vermont in the sport of field hockey. The Catamounts now own a 12-6-1 advantage in the all-time series. The River Hawks head home to host America East rival New Hampshire on Sunday, September 30 at 2 p.m.
